Just bought off FB marketplace for $30. Have only used rotary. Any suggestions? Make sure you have the Industrial model UV-18, if not, it won't last long working on rocks.

If it has a yellow stripe bowl, it's non-industrial. If it is blue, you're good. If it is yellow, you can use it for brass shell casings. 30 bucks is a steal.

Also it was used by a jewelery artiat for cleaning her work. Is there a special way that I need to clean it to get any chemicals that she might have used out of the bowl

Also visit rock tumbler.com's section on vibratory tumbling. You may want a bowl for polish only. As far as cleaning, you should be fine if you start with 220.

Heathervee, like Knave said this vibe is great for polishing but not for shaping unless you have soft material. You must use filler as indicated with media or other material to get good action. I doubt that any chemicals would remain in the polyethylene bowl that would damage most material. Several RTH members have this vibe and am sure they will give advice when it is needed.

Correct the UV18 is ALOT of of tumbler!! Maybe use aquarium gravel or pea gravel as filler.

Heathervee, you asked about the fill volume. I have the smaller Thumler UV-10 model and fill it up to the very top of the interior center cone. I use ceramic media and pea gravel for a filler. I suspect the method for your bigger 18 is the same. Terry

Thank you everyone! I have some ceramic media but there's no way I have enough to fill it yet! My husband is rewiring it as we speak and I'm excited to get a load in for polishing and test it out!

More dumb questions... If I'm going to use media other than ceramic designed for tumbling, what do I need to look out for to make sure it's high enough quality for the vibe and not too hard to run with the rocks I'm polishing? Do I need to run gravel thru the rotary to knock it down like I do ceramic? Will colored aquarium gravel bleed and stain the rocks I'm tumbling?

If it’s polished you won’t need to prep them but if rough, definitely run them in 220 in the vibe for a day. Hardness. Ceramic is very hard. So harder is better in the vibe. The softer material mucks up the 220 stage fast enough.

Stay away from anything wax coated or color treated unless you know how it’s processed

knave. So I use the rotary for stage 1 only, then everything else can be done in the vibe? I have to go and check out some more areas of the forum and YouTube, bc I thought we've been talking about the last stage polish in the vibe and now I'm getting myself a little turned around. Also I need more coffee...
