Just cut this thick slab of a large piece of Lajitas Mesa(West Texas) Petrified Wood. It's about 10 1/2 X 7 1/2 inches, largest rock I have cut on my 24 inch saw. I should get one more thick slab and then the fun begins, clamping the remainder in the saw. May have to build a custom block of wood large enough to glue it to. Hey another project!! I do like the swirls in the center of this piece, reminds me a little bit of some of the pieces that woodman posts. I do know this is from Lajitas Mesa as I packed it out myself. Don't know if it is or not (not knowledgeable enough about petrified wood) but that looks like a burl, very cool.

That's a biggun'! Beautiful wood slice, Henry. Will you be polishing it? Yes I will. Need to glue some lead weights to it before lapping. I cut this slab a bit over 1/2 inch thick. Did not want to deal with a 1/4" slab and break it somewhere in the process. I have 2 or 3 bigger(longer)pieces of Petrified Wood, that will require assistance to place easily on the saw. I suppose they waited for millions of years they should be ok until I get some help!! |

Gorgeous piece of petrified wood Henry! I will say I find a pretty decent amount of petrified wood...but nothing as patterned as this piece!
