I was given a 30lb rock that a friend picked up at a copper mine in Northern Ontario (Canada) for me. I was quite surprised by the insides. The whole rock is like this. The gold colour is pyrite and the host appears to be dolomite. The black is hematite.

Wow! That's nice! Should make some gorgeous cabs if it takes a polish.

Dang Greig, that is so freaking sweet! What're your plans for that beauty? Cabbing it...polish the slabs?

A beautiful example of copper ore with a lot going on. Lucky you.

The original slices are gifts for some fellow rockhounds that I will be meeting up with this weekend. I will hold a couple back for me to play with. probably try to polish one and cut out cubs in the other. I have more of this rock to cut but need a larger saw. If I like the result, I will do a trip next spring to get more. The site is an 8 hour drive for me.

That is so nice I don't even think it matters if it takes a polish or not.
Question: say you did grind this down and achieve a polish, would you coat this to retard any patina onset? I've handled a lot of copper sheet metal, sometimes patina is desired, sometimes not. Wouldn't think you would want it in a cab.

I don't see any native copper in there, but usually polished cabs of copper complex don't patina all that fast. If they do, a quick rub with a jeweler's polishing cloth takes care of it.

Since there's no definitive "pattern" or grain to this, couldn't you split the bigger pieces into sizes your current saw could handle? (Not trying to coax you into doing it or anything... LOL)
