OK round 2 of trying to make this photobucket thing work.... Anyone seen anything like this before? It has nice sparkly crystal structure that belies the mixed composition appearence. I came upon it in the Clear Creek area of central California.

It's pretty. You might want to try this link -- I was looking at it last night, and it seems to do a lot of nice cross referencing by location. Last night I was searching for Arizona rocks and I found a lot of California references, including this. The BLM website is good, also. www.mindat.org/index.php

Yeah I know about Mindat, I was quite amazed to come across it a year or so ago- and its my main resource for researching locations, the problem is- even though they do list quite a few rock types, they tend to focus on minerals, so rock types that are combinations of different minerals sometimes don't show up, and many subvarieties, like types of agate- don't get the attention that some of us might like to see.
We need a similar resource that is a little more artsy and rock focused.

The only rock I have from the Clear Creek area that has that sort of green color in it is what they call plasma agate. Mine though, is a little more blue green with more of a whorled wavy pattern to it....mel

The BLM rockhounding sites seem to give a lot of fairly detailed local area information. There were a lot of pages for CA and Clear Creek sounds familiar....

Plasma Agate- yeah, that might just be the ticket!
Talk about a difficult rock to get information on though- even from the BLM page all they tell you is that this stuff exists there. The pieces I have show some really neat blues as well as the green, I have a couple pieces running in the tumbler, but I think I'll save the bigger pieces for when I get a cabbing rig.
Thanks for the tip sabre52, it would have taken me a long time to come across that name, I mean who's ever heard of Plasma Agate?....
