Tomorrow, the first batch from my Loritone 12Lb finishes the polish stage. I have some cool rocks in this batch.

Hello lapis six zero in Gettysburg. You have a bunch of really nice rocks. I hope they come out nice in the smaller barrels. I am going to attempt polishing three large rocks; rose quartz, Mookaite, and a very nice carnelian I found on the beach in a 12LBer very soon. I'm debating on whether to use plastic beads or ceramics. It should be very interesting.

lapis60 You have some great looking rocks. If I could make one suggestion it would be to tumble the small, medium and large rocks together. It’s fairly important to have a good mix of sizes in the tumbler. By segregating them into rocks of the same size, you almost guarantee a dull finish. The small to medium batch will probably end up with a nice polish. The medium to large batch will likely be dull or bruised. The goal is to have the rocks sliding over each other in the barrel. With a mix of sizes, the small and medium rocks fill in the gaps between the larger rocks. This encourages sliding. Without the mix, the bigger rocks will roll down the face of the tumbling mass and crash into other rocks at the bottom of the mass. I got this booklet from my grandfather. It was copyrighted in 1962. It has been very helpful over the decades. Your rocks really are very nice. I can’t wait to see pictures when you get them the way you want them. Sincerely, Brent

The small, medium, and large were all tumbled together in the 12Lb barrel. I noticed they were dull so I split them up into two 6Lb barrels and they came out great. Sorry if I didn't make it plain enough above😊

lapis60 I was passing on some info I wish someone would have told me 40 years ago. I apologize for criticizing your tumble. You have some fantastic rocks. I always look forward to seeing your pictures. That comment about listening to the tumblers in the book kills me. It’s so true. I’m running two 12 pound barrels and two 3 pound barrels. It’s tough to tell which one I’m listening to. I’m looking forward to seeing more pictures. Sincerely, Brent.

Brent, No harm taken. What is cool is that I had that same book when my parents bought me a tumbler for Christmas. I believe it was sometime around 1969-70. You are absolutely right regarding the mixing the small to big sizes when tumbling. I was wondering if the bigger stones in the 12Lb were smashing into the smaller stones and causing damage. I figured why not experiment. Another thing you are totally right about is the sound of the tumble. I know something isn't right if the sound is off.
