- UPDATED TO INCLUDE SIDE-BY-SIDE PHOTO COMPARISON -
The first photo of each cab was taken indoors, at night, with diffused artificial light. The result is similar to a light tent. The other photos were taken during the day, near a bright window, on a snowy afternoon. The winner is.... near a bright window. The light-bulb illuminated photos might be just as good if I had photography (full spectrum) bulbs. I am using frosted LED bulbs. LEDs are notorious for not projecting full light spectrum. Dark gray spots are hematite. Uncommon in crazy lace. Light Bulb Natural Light Cactus Lace Agate from Mexico. All 3 cactus lace cabs are from the same slab. Light Bulb Natural Light

See, I'm torn about lighting, too. I love that the light tent really shows the character of the stone, but not much about the shine. I don't have any windows, with the right sunlight, that are usable for photography. Going outside is fine, but I usually do pix at night. Plus, I have a big shady tree in the yard that gets caught in the stone's polish.
I love the last three stones. The live edge is cool. But, I love the hematite in the last one the most. A little orange peel never bothered me in a pretty stone. Maybe it was micro undercutting from the hematite.

Sweet! The lace with hematite is awesome. It was a nice surprise. I didn't realize it was hematite until I polished the cab, since unpolished hematite is just gray. I've got a bunch of huge slabs from that rock. I wasn't too excited about the slabs, but now I'm marking out some cabs with even more hematite.

Nevertheless, it has the best fine line patterns, which I love. It's also softer than the crazy lace with a lot of chalcedony, so it's fast and easy to cab. I've got a bunch of it. I agree about orange peel, as long as it's shiny orange peel.

Finished another one today. Cady Mountain (flame? moss? plume?) agate.

Thanks for posting the comparison shots. There is a subtle (to me) difference between the two different light sources. I do believe I like the natural light source better than the bulb. I love those macro shots of the Mexican Lace pieces! I also like that shape on the Cady Mountain.

The Cady Mountain was a small slab. I kept grinding off the soft rind around the agate part, and by the time all the soft parts were gone, that is pretty much the shape I ended up with.

Great cabs. Both forms of lighting have advantages. Overall, though, I think I prefer natural lighting. And you know that I’m loving the crazy lace
