Being totally new to sphere making , what material would everyone recommend to the beginner to use ? i have a lot of Burro Creek rock . As in Arizona as well as a lot of squigley jasper lizard stone and some other various stuff . Oh and travertine onyx . Thanks for everyones input . Wayne

start w/ easy roll travertine i think it might be keep on the roll mohs

I agree with Mohs, start with some onyx or serpentine. It will take a third of the amount of time as a BC agate will.

I have to learn how to cut all the preforms first before im ready to start the real rounding

I have 3 or 4 in different sizes that i was told were machine shop blocks . i made a cube and when i did the angles i ended up 3/8ths of an inch off on one face

I made a jig to hold the block that I clamped in my saw vise. All the angles and cuts were exactly the same.

This might be of some help. As far as material the biggest thing is fracture free. It is very frustrating when you get part way through a piece and you have a blow out.

It just confirms what I decided a few years back, making spheres is not for me. All the work with the saw seals the deal.

There is always the option of a core drill. That saves tons of time on your preform.
