Way cool JV! I would have bet (almost) anything that was obsidian by looking at the rough!

Black Butter Dacite is a popular igneous rock in the flint knapping circles. I have some in the back yard and have made many points from it. Conchoidal fracture, is opaque with a dull gloss/matte look and is very very fine grained, unlike obsidian which is slick and more glass like.

I love the black cab. It reminds me of Victorian era Mourning Jewelry.

Looks like Anthracite coal. Where from? It’s from southern oregon, a single pocket of the stuff was mined and yielded maybe 400lbs. How hard? How dense?

Beth sometime I would like to know how you came to know about such things as Victorian Era Mourning Jewelry I have completely misplaced my set of mourning jewelry. Lol Evan, here you go... My daughter, grandson and I are the only living descendants of a family, going back to the early 1800's. I grew up in my G-Grandparents homestead. His sister lived with them after a logging accident took her husbands life in the mid to late 1800's. I have some of her and my G-Grandmas mourning jewelry and mourning clothing. My family kept and told me about lots of things in the house I grew up in and later moved back to. It was common for the wives of deceased to wear black clothing and jewelry for a while after.

Thank you Beth that is fascinating. I knew of the black clothing custom, but the jewelry thing is new to me. Very interesting indeed.

Sometimes, hair of the deceased was also worn as jewelry or added to the black jewelry. The bezel for jewelry was made from braided hair at times, or a locket with black stones/beads and hair was also common. Memorial embroidery with the hair of deceased was also done.

ETA: Beth and I were posting at the same time.

3 ladies in my house with very long hair. I could probably make some jewelry just with what I pull off my clothes in a day. Haha. Just kidding but it is bad.

Here’s an oddball, what do you think about this black jasper? That is a beautiful cab! If you do buy the lot of it I'd be interested in a chunk if you're willing to sell or trade a piece. @jadedvision

@jadedvision I have a single piece of some black "jasper" from the Biggs area from the guy who collected it, has that glassy look with long conchoidal fractures like yours. By any chance is it from around the sunstone area? There are pockets of a highly silicified basanite around an old caldera out there, I use it for backing and intarsia. The spiderman/spiderwoman "jaspers" in Idaho are also a basanite.
