I have never had it happen that bad. I've had it where my barrel starts leaking because somehow some grit got up in the crevices. I just had to clean the crevices where the lid goes and it was good to go. What were you tumbling? I have heard some material can get a gas build up. Ian

Probably gas buildup pushed the lid off. Or partially off, and rotation after rotation, with rocks hitting it took it the rest of the way. In either case, not a fun mess to clean up. I don't have the Nat Geo to know how tight you can get the lid on. For my lortone barrels I've been going extra tight. I grab the nut with the pliers of my Leatherman and spin the barrel until the bolt comes just slightly above flush with the top of the nut. Last blowout was May 2019. I tend to add hot water too, so that as it cools it creates a lower pressure inside the barrel. But even in lieu of hot water they haven't blown out. Not a bad idea to have a tray underneath to catch things if something does go wrong again. Gasket on the lid and sealing lip in the barrel are utmost priority with cleaning using a toothbrush. Check for proper seating of the inner lid before putting the metal one on. I presume you're probably doing these things, but just throwing it out there. Cleanup, try again! $#!+ Happens!

I was tumbling agates, and i think I figured out the problem. This was the first time I added powder laundry soap (based on what someone said in another thread). I think soap = gas = boom!

Only time I have had a gas issue tumbling is with some obsidian (very minor) and man-made glass (very major), never with any other material. Were your rocks clean? Some people have had issues that they attribute to organic matter being along for the ride.
Also, face your lid end the other way, if you have another blowout at least you will not risk getting everything on the pulley, belt, etc.

I don't know what happened to my tumbler - I know the lid was on tight and the barrel and lids are intact... This has been my worst fear since starting. So far, I've had some bottom bulges, but nothing severe.

LazerFlash What a pain!. I have had it happen twice with glass and obsidian. I hope it didn’t hurt your tumbler. I check them daily to look for signs of bulging.

This was a bulge I burped very carefully on a 5-gallon barrel, afraid to move it out of the shed before burping. It squirted on the 8 1/2 foot ceiling and took a half day to clean everything up. Cause: a bit of metal residue, thought I'd be smart and use the slurry off vib. lap, not smart.

But not the ceiling OMG that's bad.

I had a similar thing happen on my Nat Geo when I tried oxiclean for the burnishing stage. Didn't blow totally off but sent a stream of foam across the garage floor

OxyClean's great, but I learned a long time before my recent entry into tumbling that a LITTLE goes a LONG way!
