That's cool, looks like it got nice and shiny. I like simply round oval shapes like that for solid colored stones.
So what color is that stuff? Kind of purple? Burgundy?

It was more purple pre-cabbing but got darker as I went. It is more black now. It was fun to cab because I could see it get shinier even while it was wet, which was kind of odd for me.

It looks like you got a nice shine on that Perk! Were you able to get a picture of the star? I'm tagging Brent so he sees this. ( Starguy)

I didn't find the star but if I had, I would have captured it(Well... I would have tried😂). I was gonna tag starguy but didn't want to bother him. I have backlit it and didn't see a star. Maybe there was one? I have a little dish of the same type of garnets in the basement.

The star doesn't come from being backlit...it's my understanding it's like a star sapphire and should show up when light is directly applied to the surface. Brent can help you understand the orientation for cutting these to make the star show up on the surface...if I'm right about what I'm understanding about them.

I learned something new today!

perkins17 That’s a nice looking garnet cab. You got a great polish on it. If it has a star it won’t show by backlighting. A penlight, spot light or sunshine are the best way to find stars. Using one of those light sources look for a leg / line on the surface of the stone. Follow the leg until it crosses another leg. That will be the star. Here are some I cabbed several years (decades) ago. They just have a small penlight shining on them. Don’t worry that you’ll bother me. I love this forum. If you have a question, feel free to ask me. The two brighter six ray stars actually have seven stars on them. The main star on top and another star on the legs near the girdle. You need to rotate them around to see the other stars though. I have a pretty large collection of star garnet, star sapphire, star rose quartz and a large handful of Linde boules. Here’s seven or eight pounds of tumbled Emerald Creek garnet. If you zoom in a little, you can see some stars and lots of legs. Almost all of the larger pieces have stars. It is possible to tell if a piece of garnet will have a star before polishing it. There will be a purplish depth / flash. You can see it in the tumbled rocks.

Thank you and so sorry for the late reply. I see maybe one leg but probably lost the rest. I don't think it was a whole crystal so I might not have had one in the first place. Those cabs are awesome and the tumbles beautiful. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

perkins17 PM me before you start cabbing more of them. It’s possible to grind the star off. The silk that causes the star is usually more concentrated in the center of the crystal. I don’t usually cut the whole crystals. They’re fun to cab but they can be challenging. Here’s a whole crystal I cut in half. You can see the silk in the center of the crystal. If the silk is ground away, the star gets weaker or disappears. You don’t need the whole crystal. As long as the piece is silky it should cut a star.

Dang it.
