I found a used 15 inch raytech vibrating flat lap for $40 in area, but I think it only has the polishing pan. Where do you get your pans and is it worth the price? Thanks in advance.

In my humble opinion, only reason not to buy it immediately is you have no intention of using it. I have a Covington vibe lap. I have only used it a few times and prefer a flat or slant lap for polishing rocks.

Here is a pic from the listing. flic.kr/p/2mLcbEF It looks pretty clean, but it only has one pan. I bet I could take the pad out and use it though.

I do not know about the RayTech but a lot of these laps only come with one pan. You run your grits then put the pad in and polish in the same pan. $40.00, the pan all by itself is worth that much. Take it off their hands and clean it up and you could resell it for $100.00 at least on the west coast.

I thought the pad was glued in.

I have this model flat lap. It comes with 2 pans, 1 for grinding and 1 for polishing. I've seen the grinding pans available at a few places for about 120 or so. Assuming the unit runs, $40 is an excellent price!

When you pick it up, ask the seller about the other pan. Maybe they have it laying around somewhere. Even if it is very dished from use, you can have it milled flat at a small machine shop for less than what a new pan would cost.

Herb on your Raytech what is the difference between the two pans? Is one lighter construction or is it the surface of the pan bottom.

Herb on your Raytech what is the difference between the two pans? Is one lighter construction or is it the surface of the pan bottom. The weight and thickness of the 2 pans seems to be the same. The grinding pan has grooves etched in the bottom. Concentric circles about an inch apart and then some straight grooves running from the inner to outer circle. They are supposed to help evenly distribute the grit. The polishing pan is just flat with no grooves. I always assumed the grinding pans are tempered to make them more durable, and the polishing pans are not, but I really dont know if that is the case. There really isn't a need for the polishing pan to be tempered because of the polishing pad that is in it. I assume it costs more to temper a pan than not and that the manufacturer would want to save money but maybe not. I also have a grinding pan that does not have grooves and the only real difference in performance I notice between the two is that the grit in the grooved pan seems to get used up more at the end of each 4 hour cycle.
