Awesome! Can some one give me a fainting meme? Thanks Quartz! Here ya go! Thanks lol. Somehow I knew it was gonna be you! I have this mental picture of you having all your memes on one of those gigantic room sized computers from 1951 with all the blinking lights, reels, and a little place where the meme pops out.

Awesome! Can some one give me a fainting meme? How about just a smilie? jasoninsd you are blowing my mind dude Love the work you are putting in - beautiful stones, all of them. Thanks Tommy! That seriously means the world to me! I'm having so much fun with both the learning process as well as the actual working with the materials. Thank you for such an amazing forum which allows those of us who love these hobbies a place to share our treasures and triumphs. Thanks Quartz! Here ya go! Thanks lol. Somehow I knew it was gonna be you! LOL Nah...just quick fingers and a decent Google search most times!

What thickness do you cut your slabs to make cabs?

What thickness do you cut your slabs to make cabs? It depends on if it's a good day or a bad day on the saw. I aim for 1/4". However, I don't use a vise. I hold the rock against the fence on a 10" drop saw. Basically, my hand is the vise. So, sometimes I do get thicker cuts than I'd prefer...and sometimes those become high-domed cabs. I've learned the slide on my saw has some play (side to side), so even if I did have a vise, it wouldn't guarantee a straight and true cut every time. I need a lot better equipment...but I am trying to get the most out of what equipment I have at the moment.

What thickness do you cut your slabs to make cabs? Oh...and I cab on a slant cabber, which is basically a flat lap. I've learned that trying to do low-domed cabs is extremely difficult compared to higher domed cabs...

It's late, so for now, all I'll say is: "the weirdest cab I've made" is apparently what you call a free form. Nice. It didn't hurt, did it?

LOL It was weird for the fact that it wasn't a slab and it wasn't a shape of any recognizable kind when I started grinding on it...just a blob...and a big blob compared to what I had to grind away...and compared to a "normal" sized slab...

But in average, when I cut I do 1/4 inch as well.

Beautiful work, Jason! I can't believe you're cranking these out on a flat lap. Really sweet material, too. Were you practicing pear shapes?

Excellent work, Jason! They're all great, but I like the way the poppy jasper turned out. Wonderful polish on that one! Does this mean you're dabbling in freeforming now?

Oh...and I cab on a slant cabber, which is basically a flat lap. I've learned that trying to do low-domed cabs is extremely difficult compared to higher domed cabs... Awesome, thank you. That’s why I was curious because I tend to do a lot more low dome cabs. But in average, when I cut I do 1/4 inch as well. I get wanting to do low dome cabs...but I really seem to gravitate towards a higher domed cab...not just because they're easier to work on the flat lap. I think when there's some "meat" to the cab, it looks better. However, the downsides are 1.) the use of more material - thinner slabs means more slabs out of the rough...and 2.) the weight of the finished cab is greater - and I get that some people aren't going to want a heavier wire-wrapped cab hanging around their neck... Beautiful work, Jason! I can't believe you're cranking these out on a flat lap. Really sweet material, too. Were you practicing pear shapes? Thanks Tela! If someone would have told me the "downsides" or how difficult cabbing was on a flat lap when I first started, I might've thought I couldn't do it! LOL Funny on the pear shapes. Whenever I'm getting ready to stencil a bunch of preforms, I tell myself "try not to use so many teardrop shapes"...and invariably, I end up wanting to use that shape constantly. It is an easier shape to cab than a shape with flat sides...but I also seem to think it captures most patterns I'm looking at in the slab better than other shapes. Plus...it's traditional...kinda... Excellent work, Jason! They're all great, but I like the way the poppy jasper turned out. Wonderful polish on that one! Does this mean you're dabbling in freeforming now? Thanks my friend! Ummm....freeforms...ummmm....well....ummmm....maybe when I feel there's NO other option! LOL I need to get a french curve stencil...maybe I'd feel better about freeforms if I had an outline of that freeform. Wait...are there stencils available for "freeforms"!?!
