Here's some cabs I finished up today... Purple Cow Jasper - This material is gorgeous when you can get a solid slab to cut...or a solid preform to shape. It's one of those roughs where there's a lot of material waste looking for a solid area...unless you're going to stabilize it. Red Kaddis Jasper aka Indonesian Palm Root aka "Maggot Agate" - I received two different pieces of this. Each was a little different from the other. I do notice some pitting, but due to how busy this material is, I'll overlook a couple small pits. Sagenite Agate - I picked this up from the Rock Shed (early X-Mas present from my wife). They didn't clarify the location from whence this came...so I have no clue. LOL George West Texas Petrified Wood - Such a variety with this stuff! Olympic Poppy Jasper - So this is the weirdest cab I've made. My stepdaughter found this stone while on vacation and gave it to me to tumble. I decided I'd try to make a cab out of it instead. It was too small to slab, so I ground a flat edge and glued the dop to that spot...then I just started grinding and this is how it ended up. I'll be giving it to her for Christmas. As always, thanks for taking a gander...

Dayam! Look at that polish!
Fabulous cabs, Jason. I think my favorite is the sagenite, but that Poppy is a close second. Your step-daughter is gonna love it!

Thanks Robin! I wished I could have gotten a bigger cab out of that Poppy...it really is gorgeous. You know I suck at ID's, but this looks like it has hematite in it... Beautiful set. I love that poppy as well, I hope she asks you to wrap it! Thanks Nate! I should have put that I was going to wrap it. I'm thinking a simple silver wire-wrap since it's so small...probably one of the smallest cabs I've made! LOL I really enjoyed this one amongst the others, Jason. You are killing it....but you probably knew that Thank you SO much! The one you quoted is the one my wife really likes. She says in person it looks like actual gold running through it. It really does look better in person.

Excellent cabs, Jason! I can't pick a favorite, but I must say that I really like your Olympic Poppy. I'm about to cut a few small OP cabs for my first time. The collaboration between you and the rough resulted in a wonderful cab. I really like the shape. I hope that mine turn out as nice as yours.

The OP really is softer than I was expecting. It ground really quickly. I really had NO direction on this piece. It was a "mass" and I just started grinding down the sides and it took a shape close to this. I messed with it some more and this is how it ended up. I tend to shy away from cabs this small. I prefer the larger cabs as I think they're easier (for me) to wire wrap. However, I really do need to start making more of the smaller just to have a variety of sized available... I look forward to seeing your OPs!

The relative softness you discovered is interesting. My trim saw had to work pretty darn hard to cut out my marked OP preforms.
I'm going to start cutting a few more smaller cabs than what my typical mix has been. I suspect that I've sold more to wrappers than metalsmiths. I have a very good local customer who is a smith and she's suggested that I do that, so I need to adjust my mix.

I too was surprised at the "softness" of this material. I believe she found it on the beach in Washington state. I swear it has hematite...and maybe that's what's making it softer? Total guess on that... My wife has been the deciding factor with regards to me making smaller pieces. She has yet to want any of the pieces I've made so far...she keeps saying they're really big! I want her to want one dang it! LOL

Great looking cabs jasoninsd . The polish is outstanding. Thanks my friend! These were pretty fun to work. I have some more pieces of that Purple Cow that are stunning preforms. I'm hoping they come out as nice as these.

You are SO absolutely correct about needing to use smaller wire...the problem is, my fingers stay the same danged size! LOL I like them all —-rock, shape, shine, and photos! Thanks for the show. Thank you Pat! I was chomping at the bit to work each one of these materials. I wasn't super disappointed in any of them. So many beauties there, each scroll brings something new and worth to admire! Adrian Thanks Adrian! I've got some Stromatolite I'm working on now. It's the other Christmas present from my wife. I thought she might get hurt I put the "Maggot Agate" ahead of her present... especially since she hates me calling it that!

It was William Peterson! William Petersen was a Danish immigrant who invented the first locking pliers in his blacksmith shop, and began selling them from the trunk of his car to farmers and people in surrounding towns. (Sorry...I'm just brain fried from trying to figure out Cloudinary! )
