Benathema - The grownup version of that kindergarten salad (dressing) sounds delicious! Can you expound on the cranberry/horseradish concoction? I love horseradish...and my sister-in-law grows her own...from her grandma's old stock...

For us, many of the traditional dishes including mac and cheese. This is a regional dish I've posted in the recipe section of the board "Oyster Pie". You don't actually get a piece of this pie, you get a large spoonful (glob). forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/89016/recipe-thread?q=BurrellHere's a recipe I put together from info my wife gave me - we have it every Thanksgiving. This is my late father-in-law's recipe. Vic was Director of Marine Biology for the State of South Carolina and specialized in shellfish. He had four daughters who loved his oyster pie. It didn't take me long to figure out that you had to move fast and get a large portion as there would be no second opportunity. RickB Oyster Pie Dr. Victor Burrell 1 pint fresh oysters 2 cups coarsely crushed Saltine Crackers 1/2 teaspoon salt Several dashes of Texas Pete hot sauce 1/2 cup melted butter 1/2 pint half and half 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce Pour the oyster juice into a measuring cup and add half and half to it until you have one full cup. Add and stir in the salt, Worcestershire Sauce and hot sauce to the liquid. Add all but 1/2 cup of the crushed crackers into a medium (8x8x2) casserole dish and pour the melted butter over them. Stir in the oysters and the cup of liquid. Top with the remaining cracker crumbs. Bake appx. 40 minutes at 350 degrees, but cover loosely with foil after the first 10 minutes.

hummingbirdstones - Robin, thanks for posting this! They sound scrumptious! I know my wife has some recipes from her mom and grandma that say "a pinch" or "a bit" when it comes to certain ingredients! LOL - That's old-school! I remember asking my mom and grandma how much of an ingredient to use when making something and the typical answer was "enough". LOL!

I remember asking my mom and grandma how much of an ingredient to use when making something and the typical answer was "enough". LOL! Yep! Exactly! My mom has always said no one makes cherry pie like her grandmother did. I've thought about that over the years. I don't know that any of us would be able to duplicate the recipes of our "ancestors" in a lot of cases. Think about how ingredients have changed over the years. There may have been a particular brand of flour someone used back then which can't be acquired any longer or some ingredient along those lines. Even the smallest change to ingredients or the process can make a huge difference in the end result...

My sweetie will be in Germany this TG. Unfortunately her momma just passed away and she is right this minute about to walk on the big jet for an all nighter. So anyway, I will be alone and unsupervised for the next week so who knows what kind of trouble me and the dogs will get into I thought I was cooking up a plan to smoke some meat at my youngest's house but now their little one is sick and since nobody likes a sick kid (kidding) that plan is in jeopardy. TG might get rescheduled to Saturday. Sorry to hear that Tommy. My mother in law died in January of this year. She always came to visit for three weeks or so right about now, so things are a little different (and yeah, sad) around our house.
Hopefully you don't get into too much trouble!

She made a crab and shrimp bisque the other day and when asked about the recipe all I could get for an answer was "some of this and some of that". I've been trying to get her to write some of this down as I hate to eat something good a couple times and then never again because of "I forgot how I made it". This happened with a crab casserole a couple weeks ago. She tried it on me, then the family, then promptly forgot how she fixed it - we all liked it and want more.

@jadedvision - That's my guess on the Rueben similarity...I guess my sister-in-law is supposed to be making that. I can't imagine sauerkraut with turkey...but I love sauerkraut, so I'm up for anything with it! LOL RickB - A friend of the family who usually comes, isn't this year. She always does oyster stuffing. - My wife made chili one time and it tasted just like Wendy's chili - which I REALLY like! So, I asked her to write down exactly...and I mean exactly what she used...even down to the brand of tomato paste she used. It's the only recipe we've (*she's) gone overboard with writing down everything exactly the way it was done. Tommy and rockjunquie - It's ONE day out of the year...I don't think "cheating" on the carb diet for one day would ruin the other 364 days worth of work!

OMG haha If I have to go down it's gonna be beside you with both forks blazing haha I freakin love pecan pie. jasoninsd I didn't mean to drag the fun of gorging on TG down haha. There is no question that it's one of my favorite meals of the year and I'm one of those who piles a plate up and pours gravy over the whole thing

Sauerkraut with Bacon:
This is how my family makes it:
Cook sauerkraut (we always add a little caraway seed). Drain almost all the water out of the pot (leave a tiny bit).
Cut bacon and brown in a small pot. Add ENOUGH flour to make a rue. Cook the flour in the bacon for a minute or two. Pour into sauerkraut and mix it up good. It will thicken up the sauerkraut a little. YUM!
