Some of you may remember my sawing experience with my friends saw.....see link if interested. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=Pictures&action=display&thread=1124585800Well, I took one of the halves of petrified wood and had one of the local rock shops put a shine on it. Here you go: (oh, scale is about 6 x 6 inches and 2 or 3 inches thick) 1st pict is the unpolished halve: 2nd pict Polished halve: 4th: Side by Side Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the outcome. It took them about 6 or 7 weeks to do and the price was a little much but that's OK, I think it's a great piece. Later, Gaeter

Cher-
They put it on a flat lap (basically a big plate that shimmmeys back and forth. The plate is covered with pads of differing grits....just like sandpaper or grit.) The flat laps are very pricey and too much for my league. Anyway, they seem to do a good job and I'll probably have him do more for me in the future.

What if you tried doing them the way Nephrite does his jade boulders?

Gaetz,
That is so pretty. I was wondering when you first showed it to us whether you would try to polish it. I'm glad you did. It's gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.

That's a nice piece of wood. Amazing how much difference there is in the coloring between polished and rough.

Gaetz, Spectacular! That piece is very nice! I'll bet you were very excited when it got finished. You said it took them about 6-7 weeks....that sure seems like a long time! I know a guy that can polish things like this in a few days. He does everything on a grinder, and he only polishes on the Flat Lap. That piece of wood I had pictured earlier took him only about 3 days to do it. That's a heck of a long time to wait...it's gotta kill you, but the end results are fantastic. Steve

Steve-
Well, I could be losing my mind, but it was at least a good 4 weeks anyway. I've been so busy that I wasn't even thinking about it. It was worth the wait.
That guy you know sounds like he has a good little setup but requires a lot of hands on work to get it done.
