I suspect that it is Limonite after Pyrite. Take a piece of unglazed porclain (back of a white bathroom tile) and scratch the "limonite" on it and you should get a brown streak.

Or if its a red streak it will be some other form of iron oxide like hematite.

Thank you so much, I got the brown streak! My husband says everything he finds comes from a glacier deposite, he said he found it about 150ft down
