I had a very expensive one. (Starrets (sp?) I think) It was heavy and not digital. I gave it to DH. He loves it. I got a 6 inch digital and I find it to be accurate. I like the smaller size. For measuring cabs and jewelry and doing repetitive things, it's much more comfortable.

I'm a firm believer that when it comes to tools buy the best quality you can afford and you can't go wrong - especially now that I'm married to a German that loves high quality tools I didn't used to think this way especially when I was the guy in charge of the department expense of assigning and calibrating calipers to 60+ press operators but even then there was a fine line between initial expense and replacement expense because I cheaped out. BTW, I'm always looking for good ideas for our Amazon ads to keep them relevant so (assuming you can see our Amazon ads) don't be alarmed if you suddenly see calipers pop up. You are not being tracked, it's just me looking for relevant content

I went with a $50 6” digital Kynup, stainless and waterproof with the bigger battery that lasts a year. On cyber Monday sale for $30. .001” accuracy. Lol

Normally I'm of the stance that Tommy takes...buy once cry once. I just happened to luck into my purchase without knowing much anything about calipers.

LOL. I use a ruler. +/-1mm is all the precision I need.

The real question to ask yourself is how accurate does the measurement need to be. The zeros to the right of the decimal point get expensive at an alarming rate. The measuring tools that I use in proximity to the abrasive dirt and grime of my lapidary shop are of a very different quality than the ones which I use to measure aircraft parts.

I have a Mitutoyo 6" caliper and a Starrett micrometer that seldom leave their boxes, I usually use HF plastic vernier calipers or a recent estate purchase plastic dial calipers.
