After finishing my 4th step of polishing, I put my rock in the barrel with some ivory soap shavings and ran it for 5 hours. I FORGOT TO ADD THE WATER! Does it make any sense to run it again with the water or should I just leaave well enough alone?

I bought some "instant water" once...the directions on the package said "just add water to contents"! I'd be curious to know if there was any damage to the stones due to them not having any kind of "slurry" for cushioning... I don't have an answer for you...but I'm curious to see what others chime in with...

No damage as far as I can tell If there was no visible damage to the rocks, then I'd run it again...but I'd use water as well as Ivory this time.

Yes, run the soap again. It won't hurt either way and might be just what it needs. If you're not happy with the results after the soap run, just go back and do another step 4 run.

Maybe dumb question: it's been many years since I did any tumbling. Why use Ivory soap? As a clean-up between stages or something else?

A lot of people do it after every stage to clean the grit off the rocks. I only do it after the polishing stage to make the rocks as shiny as possible.

I use Ivory soap shavings with water between every stage after stage #1 to clean the grit off the rocks. I use Ivory because that's what a lot of people recommend as it is a mild detergent. I also include the media for the next step in the soap wash to ensure it is clean as well. I burnish after the polish stage with borax.

[chuckle] I've forgot water at every stage at least once except for polish and burnish. Nothing like a wasted week and damaged rocks and laughing outloud at oneself!
In case this helps, when I burnish I take the empty barrel and first shave the ivory soap bar into it. Then I pour in about 1/2 cup of warm water to start the shavings to dissolving and getting soft. Then I put in the rocks. Then I put in the cold water from a plastic cup that I had filled and put beside the barrel on the counter to make sure I don't forget it. Then I put in some plastic beads if they are needed. In rare instances in which I'm burnishing something delicate like feldspars, I might sprinkle some plastic beads in in layers as I add the rocks so from the very first rotation there is some cushioning.
