I love when there are some labels on items I purchase. Just am not sure that these are worm borings. According to label, it was found by Wyeville, WI. That is a small town just East of Tomah, WI. West Central part of the State. Hardness of about 6.5-7. Negative on acid test. Fairly heavy. Piece is about 5" long. Any thoughts on what it might be? Thanks.

I am not seeing it in your pictures. They would not be real worms, but Pholads (bivalves), that eat into rocks like calcite or limestone. I would have expected an acid test to be positive. So I am thinking a silica.

The right side where it looks broke off in the first pic reminds me of stromatolites.

I took some close up photos. Many areas do look like stromatolites. Thanks for the suggestion. The tan color is accurate. Gray ones are not. Dunno why someone put a little arrow on it. I didn't see anything special there.

For me it looks like algae, but not exaclty stromatolites. I don't know how it's named in English, but I found some familiar stuff in Poland in miocene rocks and it was called "rodoid" (but to be true this name is so old that it's hard to find it's definition on the internet). In my case it was a rock made in shallow sea waters by rock-creating algae - lithothamnium. This one looks different, but also like algae/made thing. If you know geologic era this speciment came from check in sources 'algae-created thing' or something like that.

Any chance that sample failed the acid test because it is dolomite? It sure looks like a carbonate rock. Please try to check the hardness on a piece of glass. There is a quarry in western WI that is a dolomite building stone that has stromatolites and other structures I will look up where it is.
