Hello, I just bought some Borax to use instead of ivory soap. How much should I use in a Lortone 3 pound rock tumbler?

Try 1 tablespoon and adjust to your taste.

denversue It’s all about your exact setup. 2T won’t hurt if you’re still in the rotary.

I have played around with Borax. However, I have never used it straight up.
If I didn't want to carve up Ivory Soap, then I would add a squirt of Dawn dish soap. Sometimes, I have also added TSP, especially if there are metals in the rocks. I am not sure if the adds helped with the burnish, but they didn't hurt.

denversue Are you going to post some photos soon? I’m glad you found a tumbler that’s working good. I have a 33B and two qt-12s. The big ones only run coarse grit.

I am unable to post photos, even after going thru that darn Cloudinary tutorial. But I do have some nice pics. The picture knave posted for me of the crazy lace is an eBay picture which is why it's so crappy. I couldn't take my own picture because I found someone at the Colorado Gem and Mineral Guild to cut off that wing-like piece of my slab(!) They pressured me into joining the club and taking a free Geology class in January. I am a bit worried that everyone in the club is over 90 years old. No disrespect to any 90-year-olds, but it's not my usual peer group

LMAO Sue, that is the same here! With all due respect, as well, we have some aged people as well. The fact is the lapidary glory days were in the 60s 70s and many people have stayed true to the hobby from that time. My girls were freaked out I’m afraid. Maybe you can bring a friend along.
