Hey guys, sorry I'm late on this but one of our members minerken was making custom turned aluminum dop sticks. The set came with a knurled ( I think that's the right word) handle. Very nice.
You can see more about it here
You could PM if interested. He did it as a hobby, really. He was very reasonable and the product is awesome.
Thanks Tela! I remember seeing that...not when it was 1st posted, I wasn't here yet. It really does look like a great alternative! Awesome cabs and congratulations on the new cabbing machine. That Prairie Agate cab is beautiful. Thanks Diane! That Praire Agate needs to be fixed desperately! LOL - The dome is really bad...but the material is worth me reworking it. jasoninsd you sprinkle the baking soda on the ca glue and it sets up almost instantly. Probably doesn't help much with the glue between the stick & the rock. I've tried gel ca glue for dopping and don't care for it. Y'all may be right with the covid super glue idea. Seems it's recently it didn't work as well. ETA: this video explains it nicely Thank you so much for posting this Nate! This would help though. It's the glue that oozes out from under the dop which takes forever to dry...so sprinkling the baking soda on it would help tremendously. Interesting on the CA gel...that's all I use for dopping and I prefer it over the regular CA.

Making the top crust on crème brûlée, fire-roasting peppers or tomatoes... there's always an excuse to play with a torch. You're telling me. I've been using a 100,000 btu "Weed Dragon" propane torch to light my wood stove in the barn. No kindling or newspaper required. Just big logs and about 30 seconds with the Dragon breathing on them, and they are engulfed in flames. If I get my 200 pound propane tank filled (too expensive right now), I can upgrade to a 500,000 btu torch, which should be something like a fire breathing chimera. Before you get too excited, everything I mention in this post is probably illegal in California for one reason or another. One more thing…

Yes, knurled — weird as it looks — is a word. It is the cross-hatched, machined texture on many metal handles that gives a nice grip

If you think knurled is weird, try engine turning. : )

Those are awesome cabs! You’re breaking in those new wheels right. Thanks Brent! I found the wheels are highly influenced and are broken in quicker from several layers of knuckle skin! LOL Awesome cabs. That purple cow is cool as hell. Pretty quick learning curve on the new machine sir. Well done again. Thanks Lunk! If you can get a slab to stay together, it really does make killer cabs! Believe you me...I've got a lot more learning to do on this new machine. Damn dude! Blinded by the light Look at that shine! Killer Thanks Paul! Wrapped up like a (??) - I've always been confused by what that second line is finished with! LOL I definitely have a LOT of work to do in order to catch up to your level. Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Thought it Was wrapped like a ****** too.

I made my own dop sticks with 5/8" aluminum rod. Cut it, drilled and threaded a hole in the end and I use flat head machine screws like the one that was shown earlier. The handles are not knurled but it's not been an issue at all. Accelerating the CA glue can also be done by mixing a little baking soda with the glue and then apply it or mix 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda into 1/4 cup of purified water. Spray or brush on one surface, apply CA to the other and join immediately. This gives you a little working time. You can increase the B soda up to a teaspoon to make it faster. Of course you can buy accelerator but why bother?

Of course you can buy accelerator but why bother? Thanks for chiming in! Pretty smart the way you made your own handle for the dop! - Awhile ago I cut a 3/8" welding rod to 3" lengths and have been using them. I don't think I'd like the larger handle...I've gotten use to how the 3/8" dowel rolls around in my fingers. Of course, I've never actually tried the larder size, so I don't know for sure. LOL Thanks for posting how you accelerate the CA! Ever since Nate posted about the baking soda, I've been using that trick. I glue the dops onto the preforms, then sprinkle on enough baking soda to completely cover the CA...and like everything I do in life, I overdo it...just to be safe! LOL I leave them for a couple hours before I mess with them. Sometimes the CA is still a hair soft, so I let it dry a couple more hours...and other times it's hard as a rock, so I know it's ready to go. Either way, it's a lot quicker than the 48 hours I used to have to wait! LOL I agree on buying the accelerator! As long as I can steal some baking soda from my wife's baking goods stash without her noticing, I'm good to go! LOL
