Hey Folks, I recently got an old 18 inch Rogue Hydraulic Feed Rock Saw. Have her all fixed up, but was looking for recommendations on what PSI to run her at. She has an old PCI PSI gauge, and it seems that with a heavy rock, the vice does not start to move until around 20 PSI. At around that pressure, it seems to take fairly long to cut. If I pump it up to 40, it seems to do a little better, so long as I keep the blade sharp. Afraid anything over 20 is going to be rough on the vice long run though. Have any of you had one of these old saws? I know Rogue made quite a few of them way back. Any recommendations would be great! Mainly cutting agate and jasper. Link to an image of the gauge. i.gyazo.com/c5fa6b5890c936e69bdf16d3556e8afb.png

I rebuilt the pump drive and replaced the pump on one of these several years ago, owner said it ran good ran at thirty lbs. pressure. Might take the gauge to a hydraulic shop for an accuracy test, 20 psi to start it seems high.

What diameter is your cylinder? I had a ROC saw that was compressed air over oil hydraulic. It had a one way flow valve on the return line to set the travel maximum feed speed that I set to 1" in about 6 minutes so it wouldn't go too fast at the end of a cut. Seemed like about 30 psi pressure worked good, and the flow valve prevented cacastrophe quite well. Are the Rogues the ones that use power steering pumps to run the hydraulics?
The ROC had a 1" ID ram, so .78" area which makes 40PSI about 31 lbs of force.

Thank you all for your feedback. It sounds like so far, I've been running it at about the right psi.
The gauge does look like the original with it, and I know this spent some time outside in the weather, so I would imagine you are probably right and it could be off a little bit.
I'm not sure if its a power steering pump, but it looks like it probably isn't far from it.
On the rod, I'll check it as soon as its done with the cut its on right now (Cutting some Gary Green atm). Seem to recall it appearing to be somewhere between half an inch and an inch, but I'll double check it.
So far I love the saw, my only gripe is with how its built, its hard to get to the Pully Belts. Adjustable belts seem to have made that easier to work with though, as I can change them without having to separate the shaft bearings from the frame, so that should make changing the belts in the future an easier task.

By adjustable belts you are talking about link belts? I use a link belt for the feed on my old highland park saw because the arbor has to come off to change belts, but for the blade I won't use them, I've had them slip and the blade stop on a saw before.

I checked those out at Jerry Porters house when he was doing a clearance sale, I came home with 3 of them, still havent had time to play with them yet.

Brian! lapidarycentral - it's good to see you here. Sounds like you're in good hands with the saw so while you're here feel free to show off some of that bad-ass dazzling new Kaleidoscope you've been cutting Some of the latest cuts attached! We are still working on getting the mines revived, and just got back from our first 7 day mining trip to get things going! But, this is mostly from some we dug last month by hand while up repairing the backhoe. Keep an eye on the website, we got some GORGEOUS material during this latest dig! Backhoe ran great for 4 days, but then the main hydraulic line blew so back to more repairs. She set in the weather for 3 years, so have a feeling 2022 is going to see a lot of servicing of the old gal.
