This is my favorite tumbled rock. It is not mine: I bought it on eBay. I'd like to know how they get it so flat and round!

Hello! I think that might be a cab instead of a tumbled stone. I could be wrong though. I see why you like it!

I agree with it being a cabochon. You can go to the cabochon section and learn more.

I was gonna write the whole word, but my mind went blank on how to spell it! 😂 It was a long day!

I agree on cabochon...and this is the first time I've seen you post pictues...so congrats on figuring it out Sue! Of course...it could be an oval that was cut from a slab and then tumbled. It depends on whether both the top and bottom edges are rounded. If only one edge is rounded, it's probably a cabochon. If both edges are rounded over, then I'd say it was a "preform" that was placed in the tumbler.

Very pretty. Thanks for sharing. It looks like an agate that has been cabbed.

perkins17 I just love it when people talk about me like I'm not there. :-) I still do not know what a cab is because I presently do not have the attention span to read through all the informtation. I thought it was just a regular tumbled rock that turned out really good.

It is basically a stone that is shaped and domed. I think it did turn out good whether it was tumbled or not. I really like it too. Cab is just the shortened version of the word cabochon, and what I normally call cabochons.

Ovals like yours and other geometric shapes are most common, but all kinds of freeform shapes and designs can fit into the classification of cab. It could have been shaped and then tumbled, or made entirely by hand on a machine. If you want I can find you a link for a youtube video of one being made. It's fine to be new and have a lot of questions, I have been involved in lapidary and whatnot off and on since 1973 or so and still see creative things for the first time and wonder how they did it. It's a bit overwhelming at first to see all the possibilities.
