I had my first ever lapidary lesson today and I made a cab from a slab!
I am linking to photos on Imgur because Cloudinary says 'Unknown API Input' when I try to upload on it. If anyone knows how to fix that let me know!
Let me know how I can improve for next time.

Wow! You did a really good job of it. Looks like you're an old pro. The dome is very nice, the outline is clean... the girdle isn't too big. It's nice and shiny. Sweet!
I'm tagging Tommy for you for help with cloudinary. (Maybe knave can help, too.) I'm useless at it.

Thank you! I had so much fun doing it. The bottom has one edge that could be smoother but live and learn! I have another lesson next week. The guy is so awesome, he’s a rock hound in his 80s with museum level number of rocks in his house. He says he is trying to pass his skills to the next generation. He seems really sweet and is super helpful.

Since you are apparently using Imgur, you do not need Cloudinary; they serve the same purpose. When you select your desired image in Imgur, you have multiple link options; simply copy the link titled 'BBCode' or 'Linked BBCode' and post that link directly into your forum post. Hope that helps. Nice cab!

Wonderful cab! Are you sure that's your first? It looks like you've been cutting for a while.

You did a great job on your first cab!
Older rockhounds are the absolute best to learn from. They have so much knowledge to share and in addition you are performing a service to them as well. Having an interested student to share with just gives them the biggest kick and makes them happy. A win-win situation!
Enjoy your lessons with this lovely gentleman.

That's a great looking cab Cade. One would not know that it was a first cab by looking at it, it looks like you've been doing them for awhile now. Great job!

You guys are so nice! I did cut my knuckle on the coarsest belt on the cabbing machine even though he warned me to watch out for it haha. The only reason it looks halfway decent is that he is a good teacher!

cadefoster117 that's some nice work. Just lost one of my lapidary mentors in his 80's just a few weeks ago, those who remain are a treasure that should be valued.

cadefoster117 Very well done for your first cab. I must have made at least 30 cabs before one turned out that nice! Now you've got to make some more ASAP so your newly-learned skills really sink in. That Missouri lace agate sure looks a lot like Mexican crazy lace.

holajonathan Thank you! I know I thought the same. Apparently it is from Washington County, MO. I have not been there myself, I'm closer to St. Louis.

I am hoping this guy sticks around for a while. I have so much to learn from him. He's also just a super chill guy.

Like most things in life, even a few lessons from a pro goes a long way to getting off on the right foot. I am 100% self-taught. Only recently did I even see someone else's cab in person. I could have saved a ton of trial and error (and error, and error) by getting a few lessons when I first started.

Cade, that is a fantastic first cab! Way to go!! I think I'm a little jealous that you're able to hang out with the "wise sage" and that he's willing to teach the things he's learned. That really is SO awesome!

His setup is super impressive. Besides having rooms full of display specimens (which he says he gives tours of to school children, scouts etc.), he has cabinets and cabinets full of rough rock and slabs. Even his front yard has a ton of large shiny rocks in it. When I drove up and saw that I was like okay this is the right house.
I think I will bring him some Xmas cookies next time.
