Awesome cabs jasoninsd! Sorry for the late reply. I think the 1st velvet obsidian teardrop is my favorite. I tried obsidian this weekend and (insert nice word for massacred) it. I think I could use those as mirrors.

Drooling over the obsidian! Thanks Ali! It took me a couple times to take the pictures of the obsidian...not because of the shine, but because I had to clean up my OWN drool! LOL So nice! I was sure that the obsidian cabs were going to be my favorite when I saw them, but the others are no slouches either! Great work, Jason! Thanks my friend! I think the obsidian is my favorite out of this bunch...mainly because it was such a surprise that it polished up so nicely after the fit it gave me back in July! LOL Pics 1-7: Mexican Royal Velvet Obsidian. So there's only two cabs, the teardrop and the oval...but I was so stoked I was able to get a polish on these I took tons of pictures! LOL! These have been shaped and sitting on the workbench since July when I couldn't get the scratches to come out using the slant cabber. Well, I guess after a week of use, the new Nova wheels are broken in enough that I was able to get the scratches out! Gorgeous cabs Jason! Is it my imagination or are you starting to venture out of your teardrop shape comfort zone a bit? Maybe you've doing it the whole time but it's me who hasn't been paying attention Edited to add: I just noticed you addressed this three posts above so you'll be doing weird and wonky freeforms like me before you know it! Thanks Tommy! Whoa, whoa, whoa...now just wait one minute...I never said anything about freeforms! LOL Although...I did tell my wife if anyone asked what to get me for Christmas, to tell them I wanted a French Curve...which of course I had to show her what it was...so maybe Santa might bring me something to do some...I'm not sure I can say it without choking...fr...fre...freef...freeforms! LOL Awesome cabs jasoninsd ! Sorry for the late reply. I think the 1st velvet obsidian teardrop is my favorite. I tried obsidian this weekend and (insert nice word for massacred) it. I think I could use those as mirrors. Thanks Perk! Sorry to hear the obsidian is giving you fits. I'm not gonna lie. I'm a bit shocked it polished up the way it did for me. I had a thread about it back in July - if you search the forum for Obsidian, you'll see a thread from me. There was a lot of good information in that thread...

I think I actually saw that thread! It was helpful, I just destroyed mine. I will work on it when I have more patience. I was kinda losing it with the obsidian.

Wow! That obsidian came out great!!! But, they are all awesome. I can't believe I almost missed this eye candy.
Your pictures are awesome, too. They really show the shine.

Thanks Tela! Yeah...the obsidian definitely stole the show in this batch! LOL I was going to try and cut some more obsidian preforms today...but it was a lot cooler (read that as colder! LOL) than they said it was going to be, so I wussed out and didn't do any sawing. Oh well...it'll be there for a later date.

Great job on a difficult material - obsidian. but your other cabs are superb too, especially pictures 8, 9, 12, 13 & 14.

I think the real test on obsidian will be whether I can do the next ones start to finish on the cabbing machine. These were started on the slant cabber 6 months ago. So, I'll be pretty stoked to give this a shot again! I uncovered another small ziploc bag of Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper yesterday when I was looking for something else. I didn't remember having that bag until I found it. LOL

These are all very nice, Jason, but the Velvet Obsidian is stunning. I must admit, however, that I am feeling a little inadequate, because I thought we both agreed that obsidian was impossible to polish and we were going to give up. Ok, I guess only I gave up, you tried again and conquered. You have motivated me to slab some of my Mexican sheen obsidian and figure out how to replicate your fantastic results. Besides the obsidian, my favorite is #9. I've got agate from Mexico that is similar, and I love it. Yours turned out great! Questions about the obsidian cabs: 1. Did you cut the slabs? If so, did you cut parallel to the sheen layer (so you get color when looking directly at the cab), or did you cut at a slight angle (like 10 or 15 degrees?) 2. Were the cabs polished at all when you finished with the 3000 wheel? 3. Did you use the cerium oxide polishing disc for final polish? If so, how is that thing holding up? I am very close to buying one, but I am waiting for you to give it an endurance test. Thanks for sharing. These are some great cabs.

Ok, I guess only I gave up, you tried again and conquered. You have motivated me to slab some of my Mexican sheet obsidian and figure out how to replicate your fantastic results. Besides the obsidian, my favorite is #9. I've got agate from Mexico that is similar, and I love it. Yours turned out great! Questions about the obsidian cabs: 1. Did you cut the slabs? I am very close to buying one, but I am waiting for you to give it an endurance test. Thanks for sharing. These are some great cabs. Thank you so much Jonathan! First...I will say I'm more surprised than anyone about the outcome of that obsidian! I was honestly figuring I was going to "try" and the result would be the same scratches. I was jut planning on freeing up those two dops for something else! Surprise though! LOL 1. I cut as parallel to the sheen as I could. These pieces were tumble size rough, so I had the opportunity to cut edges to determine which way to go with them. This was the first time I cut obsidian and messed up the first couple of pieces...and they were nice sized pieces. I was cutting perpendicular to the sheen, rather than parallel, but I didn't know it. I quickly learned. 2. I used the cerium oxide disc after the 3000...but nothing between the 3000 and the cerium oxide. 3. Yes. It's holding up very well. I'm having no issues. I don't use the water valve that is meant for the disc. In order to do that, I'd have to remove the splash guard. Rather than doing that, I use a spray bottle aimed at the center of the disc and run the cab over the disc since there's access to it without removing the splash guard. As far as how long it's going to last or how long it's going to be effective, I have no idea...but it's not showing any signs of giving up at this point...

Years ago, I got a small box of rainbow obsid from something or other Creek. Forget the name now- one cup of coffee yet. Anyway.... Oh wait- Davis Creek (?). It's gorgeous stuff and super thick. I keep putting off working on it. You give me hope. I have screwed up enough labradorite to be gun shy, but maybe there is hope for me.

I have a bag of Labradorite that I've been putting off...and still am for now. LOL
