Hello fine rocking community. I’ve been nickel and diming my way into this craft. I got a LU6x combo machine way back when. I bought a diamond 80 wheel from Kingsley. I was using loto, or sic belts on expando for the remaining steps. Now I have purchased a good set of novas, and also, a new 80 hard wheel. The new hard wheel is only 1” wide so I do regret that. But the worn diamond 80 seems to cut like the 220 sic wheel I have (which I will eliminate now, I’m convinced even after being dressed it is putting a hop in my machine.
Yes I’m cheap. Out of necessity. Is there a good chance I can make the worn wheel serve in place of a 220? Thoughts?

So my setup now would be 2 hard wheels on the lortone (higher rpm) both 80 grit, one well worn.
And then 4 novas on the Beacon Star Holiday grinder.

I am interested to see what the consensus opinion is in answer to your question. There have been post that suggest a worn 600 belt can work like a 1200.

Good point par5. Also there is the marker trick. The 280 soft does seem to easily remove the worn wheels scratches. So I’m likely ok for now.

Vince's wheels on his Genie (all of them) are so worn that he can get a high polish on his 3,000. His 80 wouldn't cut anything really hard unless he had days to work on that one stage. He will pop over to my machine sometimes (I have a newer 80) in order to grind those hard ones.

I have a worn dp 80 and an aggressive top 80. The top80 leaves scratches that a 220 would have trouble with. I do all my shaping on the two 80's and just tickle the preform with the other wheels. The worn dp 80 is used to fine tune the shape.

6 wheels a rolling Ev very good & gneiss wheels last long time
try to keep the stones moving across the full width on the Nova's especially the 280 grit
wore a bare spot in the middle of mine still a functional wheel if ya work around it
hope all's well and Mason & Riley take an interest
