What color was the water (streak) So this isn't going to help...it was a mix of dark red and black... Hematite is distinctively red. Oh for Pete's sake! LOL Hematite is distinctively red. Truth. I'm still on my first cup, too!
What color does marcasite bleed?
I thought Marcasite bled more black(ish)... Truth. I'm still on my first cup, too!
What color does marcasite bleed?
I don't know, but the way this conversation is going it is probably distinctively red. LOL!!!! Oh no...even more confusing with it bleeding both black and red! LOL

Hematite can be that gray color, but I suspect it's pyrite or marcasite. That bone has a southeastern Utah look to it and I've found coprolite in that region that has marcasite which has a similar appearance to your beautiful cab.

LOL, when I sent it to jasoninsd he said... ummm, do you know you sent me some dino bone and I said no. I was meaning to get a picture of the rock on RTH for identification help, but couldn't capture a very good picture because I had to take them wet and it didn't help take better pics. I just ended up sending it to Jason without an ID. I am glad I did because you really brought out the beauty in that chunk of dino bone! Nice work! I was also happy that you could find a cab in that little slabette because it did break up a bit in the delivery process. All of this awesome material I have was hounded back in the 60's by a friends grand father. I really wish he could see where his collection went, how cool some of this stuff turned out and that it got into hands and minds that really enjoy the specimens. I will be giving the family some pocket stones that I polished as a Christmas gifts as a thank you for letting me take some of this awesome material home. I was also only picking through the scraps that the lapidary club left behind, so I imagine I missed some really spectacular material... I am glad this one moved to the front of the line because it is really a joy to look at, thanks! Oh yeah, nice work on the pics as well!

Woah! Those are beauties! I bet it's hematite. I cabbed some lapis with pyrite, and this doesn't look a ton like it. Okay, that sounds funny in writing but I'm just trying to use my "vast knowledge" here 😂🤣!

That bone has a southeastern Utah look to it and I've found coprolite in that region that has marcasite which has a similar appearance to your beautiful cab. Thanks for chiming in on this one Randy! I've got a small little chunk left. I might see if I can get a picture posted of that to see if that will help...I don't think it will though as I never say any indication of any of this in the larger piece before I worked it. So...this went from a 50/50 coin toss between Pyrite or Hematite to a roll of the dice with Marcasite added to the equation as well. LOL I thought maybe the macro pics would help with the ID...but so far, not so much. LOL I bet finding the Coprolite with Marcasite was like opening a Christmas present and realizing you got something you hadn't even known you wanted until you opened it! LOL, when I sent it to jasoninsd he said... ummm, do you know you sent me some dino bone and I said no. I am glad this one moved to the front of the line because it is really a joy to look at, thanks! Oh yeah, nice work on the pics as well! Thanks my friend...for a LOT of things! I wasn't going to mention I helped ID this...since I'm usually SO bad at IDing anything! LOL Even wet, this just looked dark...with only slight indication of the cell structure. I knew it was a bit unusual because of the "bits" of red in the slab...but never saw the metal (whatever it is...yet to be determined with certainty! LOL) The other piece that's left is smaller...but I sure am going to try and work it. I can't remember exactly which part of the slab it broke from...the top with the metal, or the bottom with more "gem" in it. I guess the grind will answer that. LOL Now I realize where you got this from...I know...I'm a little slow sometimes! LOL - I was thinking it was from a booth at the Madison Rock Show...but nope! LOL - I think it's really cool you're going to give them some of the material back. I know that will probably mean a TON to her! Of course, if/when you do go back, you know what this material looks like in case there's any more "scraps" laying around! LOL This material is super special...and I owe you on this one.

Whatever it is, I’d say it’s gorgeous! What a beautiful cab and finished to perfection!
Between this one and that druzy Bot you posted last week, i couldn’t tell you which was my favorite, but I can say for sure that both are amazing.
You may need to consider a little shadowbox to show off these beauties to anyone that stops by.

No matter what type it is, it's awesome! Leave it be she says! In the grand scheme of the universe, no, it doesn't matter... However, if I ever start selling things, it'd be nice to have an actual ID on it. (LOL - Like I'd ever sell this one! LOL)

I'd like to use them as "display" pieces if/when the time comes that I take these to sell at rock shows/swaps. This one, that druzy Bot, and a couple of the Teepee Canyon Agates will likely never be "for sale".

Elizabeth and I are both leaning towards a more metallic looking hematite. How did it cut? Hematite feels a lot softer than Pyrite when cutting, and bleeds red and black for sure, I haven't cut marcasite except in dendritic form in plume agate, so I can't say much on that. I have never seen pyrite that wasn't at least a little bit yellowish, so I'm really doubting that's what it is. I was at a living estate shortly before we moved, and there was this large chunk of red "jasper" on the floor under a table that I kept ignoring till about the 4th lap through the room it was in. When I saw bone cells peeking out I took it home, all I have done so far is chunked it down and created a couple displayable slabs on the 24" saw (it was that big) I had before we left, but there was definitely something metallic in it. I don't think it was as gemmy as this though. I'll find it again someday when we finish unpacking. Here is an example of hematite in poppy jasper from WA, where there is more hematite the poppies are more red, same way hematite turns tiger eye red. Hard to see in the pic, but the top had bands of poppy that are pretty spectacular in person.

rockstock found an interesting metallic spot in a coprolite and might be able to share insight with us.

Hard to see in the pic, but the top had bands of poppy that are pretty spectacular in person. Thanks for chiming in on this one. It cut very easily...no different than the Dino Bone. OMG! I can't wait to see pics of that monster Dino Bone...a 24" saw to cut it...I can't imagine this beast! I love that Poppy Jasper with Hematite! So, I finished a different cab this morning...and I'm posting pics below. Whatever "metal" is in the cab I did this morning, it's totally different than what's in the Dino Bone. The metal in today's cab definitely has a yellow/gold tone to it. My wife asked if it was gold. LOL. It immediately turned the water jet black and stained my fingers black. I've only worked one other metal that was that messy, and that was a silver ore. So if anyone knows for certain what today's cab had in it, it can be checked off the list of potentials in the Dino Bone. rockstock found an interesting metallic spot in a coprolite and might be able to share insight with us. Thanks for tagging him Randy! So here's pics of a different cab from this morning. It came in a box of hodge podge materials off eBay, so I have no clue as to it's origin or identification. Like I said above, the metal definitely has a gold/yellow tone to it...and turned the water and my fingers jet black like there was ink in it... Yes...I had to zoom in on the "monster" guy. LOL

That's marcasite in quartz. Or, pyrite in quartz. Really black fingers is pyrite. It's really good looking material and your cab is awesome!

I agree with Tela. Looks like Marcasite to me as well.

Since it's stained the agate around it black and not red, I think marcasite is the ticket. That's what it does in the GYP material we have, plumes near the marcasite are black.

I had to look up the difference between the two.
They are essentially the same thing. Pyrite has cubic crystals and marcasite has bladed crystals.
