Truth. I'm still on my first cup, too!
What color does marcasite bleed?
I don't know, but the way this conversation is going it is probably distinctively red. LOL!!!! Marcasite definitely makes black water. Pyrite and marcasite are both iron sulfide, but have a different crystal habit. Amazing cab.

That's marcasite in quartz. Or, pyrite in quartz. Really black fingers is pyrite. It's really good looking material and your cab is awesome! Thanks Tela! So the second cab has Pyrite...so that means that can be ruled out with what's in the Dino Bone, because it didn't bleed black to the same extent...not even close. I agree with Tela. Looks like Marcasite to me as well. Thanks Jean! Since it's stained the agate around it black and not red, I think marcasite is the ticket. That's what it does in the GYP material we have, plumes near the marcasite are black. Sorry...I'm kind of slow sometimes. Are you referring to the Dino Bone or that second cab as having the marcasite? GYP with marcasite would be stunning! I had to look up the difference between the two.
They are essentially the same thing. Pyrite has cubic crystals and marcasite has bladed crystals.
Thanks for looking this up Tela! So...if pyrite and marcasite are the same thing (essentially)...and both bleed black ink...which the Dino Bone didn't - not like this second cab...then in my head, that leaves Hematite as the metal in the Dino Bone. That's if my reasoning is correct...which it might not be! LOL Hot damn! That cab is spectacular! Thanks Robin! It's one of the thinnest domed cabs I've done. It took forever to try and get the middle to lose its flat spot! I don't know, but the way this conversation is going it is probably distinctively red. LOL!!!! Marcasite definitely makes black water. Pyrite and marcasite are both iron sulfide, but have a different crystal habit. Amazing cab. Thanks Stephan! Dang...I thought WE were the ones that had habits with regards to the rocks...turns out they've got their own habits too!

What a treasure that is. My somewhat educated guess is marcasite. "Somewhat educated" only because I have rocks with both pyrite and marcasite, so I have a basic understanding of what they look like. I've seen d-bone where the cell structure outline is pyrite, but I haven't seen it where the cells themselves are metallic. Very cool rock. I'd love to see what it looked like in rough form if you've got a pic.
As for your second cab, that looks like pyrite for sure. Pyrite usually smells a little like rotten eggs (sulfur) when you grind it, and it creates a nasty black slurry. Did you smell the eggs?

Yeah...I definitely feel like I hit the mini-jackpot with this one! I'll have to look back and see if I took a pic of the rough beforehand. I don't think I did...but I do have a small piece left over and I'll see if I can find that. On the second cab, funny you bring up the smell. I forgot to mention that. It wasn't the "normal" sulfur smell - like rotten eggs. It smelled more like a rotten bog - or a stagnant swamp. My wife came down while I was grinding it and I thought she was going to say something about the smell...but she didn't...she passed out on the floor immediately! (Kidding...she didn't pass out! LOL)

jasoninsd my comment was on your marcasite agate. The marcasite in the GYP we have seen is generally small crystals dispersed through the agate, and the plumes will be mixed white and black. It is possible that the people I learned that from were wrong, though, and the little metallic bits are really manganese, the side discussion with Elizabeth I just had brought up psilomelane plume so I looked it up and discovered I was wrong about there being hematite in it.

That makes sense. GYPPA is quickly becoming one of my favorite materials. I think there's so much beauty in the way the plumes look...almost otherworldly - or cosmic in a sense. Thank you for giving me your input...and please thank Elizabeth for her input too. The marcasite in that second one has a definite shine to it, while the metal in the Dino Bone is more of a dull gun metal grey that doesn't shine or reflect in the same manner...

So, this is probably one of the coolest cabs I've ever done! I received a box of rocks from my good friend stewdogg (Jesse). In the box was a bag labeled they were from an "old-timers" collection. Pawing my way through the bag, I immediately recognized there was a chunk of Dino Bone. Well, I have quite a few pieces of Dino Bone, so I wasn't thinking I was going to work this anytime soon...but something in my gut told me to go ahead and work this piece. There was NO indication from the slabette there was any (EDITED: Hematite, Pyrite, or Marcasite - yet to be determined) in the bone. Well, after I cabbed this, I sent pictures to Jesse and he told me he still has a chunk of this...so I don't feel "as" guilty that he sent me this unbelievable specimen. I've searched the internet and couldn't find anything like thus piece. I also asked several members through PM if they'd seen anything like it and no one has. I'm still in awe when I look at this piece. knave - This is the best polish I could get on this piece. I took it to 3000 and tried to use cerium for polish, but it mucked it up. I tried twice, but each time all it did was smudge the surface. There is no undercutting (or cellular raise) like in most Dino Bone pieces... It's a son of a gun to try to get good pics...but here it is. Thanks for taking a gander!

Awesome cab! It's always nice when you get a surprise like that. You might want to try posting at The Boneyard. It's a FB group that only deals with dino bone and pet wood. A lot of very knowledgeable people there and some really nice eye candy.

She's a member (or whatever you call it) of the Fairburn Agate page. She's always showing me pictures of the recent finds from people posting on there. I think it's just to make me jealous! LOL - Thanks for the info on the Boneyard. Maybe I'll see if she'll join that thingy so I can look over her shoulder!
