I found this in early April in Lake Michigan originally thinking it was just a gnarly looking piece of coral fossil but I ended up doing a double take and scooped it out. I was pretty sure it was some kind of tooth so I ended up asking the members at www.thefossilforum.com/ what they thought and within a couple hours they identified it as Equine, P2, aka horse teeth. Would be very interesting to know how it got there.
Curious to see what other oddities you guys have come across in your adventures.

Found this on a creek bank that partially collapsed. As best as I can tell, it and the rocks around it were 3-4 ft underground when the bank gave way. I ran it for 2 weeks in course grit to get the crud off.

I found some opalized wood was three different colors brown, white, and lime green. I'll post a picture when I get home.

brybry What do you reckon it is? That's the after photo with the coarse grit? I found a piece of what I would wager is aluminum waste that has that same sort of all over the place shape going on.

Not real sure. It has other rocks embedded and is covered in pits. It resembles melted rock and is non magnetic. Being roughly 3-4 ft below ground, if it is something melted, it would've happened decades ago.
We do get lightening strikes a few times a year. Could be from a lightening strike maybe.

I use a metal detector and have found some crazy stuff: Sex toys, human teeth with fillings, crematorium tags (the last two are a bit spooky and I put them back), what I first thought was a war of 1812 canon ball, but was an iron ball from a rock ball mill...long way from any mine or refinery, and a car motor down about 4'. I found a horse drawn sleigh scuba diving 60' on the bottom of a lake and learned later that they went thru the ice in the late 1800s (losing the horse and sleigh. I have found melted metal like in the picture above and it was melted beer cans from a bond fire. So often, I question how and why some things end up where they are found.

That was really interesting ... and strange. Finding that sleigh would be surreal.

This could also explain the horse tooth find.

vegasjames Those are awesome! They would look really good as book ends for my fantasy section Best guess as to what it is? Looks kind of like a petrified or solidified mud cracks, but that doesn't really make sense

Just thought they were really cool looking so brought them home. My mom took 1 or two of them because she liked them also.

Great example of a sedimentary structure, solidified mud cracks. Along with preserved ripple marks some of the most common features in the rock record. Nice well preserved example.
