I had another lesson yesterday, and my teacher wanted me to work with something a little softer than a 7 so we chose this snowflake obsidian. I think this one didn't turn out as well as the first one, it doesn't look as perfectly round to me. Though he was still very nice and said he gave it an A. I think I was putting too much pressure on the top and bottom of the oval.
Anyway let me know your thoughts. My teacher could be biased because I brought him a bunch of Christmas cookies haha.
Cheers,
Cade

Good job! Most people have a little trouble with obsid. Your dome is perfect.

Thank you so much! I'll try again soon. I have started a tiger iron square cab, crazy I have never seen material that 'bleeds' on you before!

Nice cab @cadfoster117 It could be the pattern on top that is making an optical illusion. I thought it looked a little off oval at first. After I looked closer I didn’t see it anymore. Well done. Any plans for a cabbing machine in your future?

Any plans for a cabbing machine in your future? I would love one! And a saw too of course. We just moved and had to redo our new kitchen so I don't have a ton of extra $$ at the moment. I will save up for one though. Do you have a recommendation for a particular machine or saw?
Also thanks!

cadefoster117 There are lots of different cabbing machines. Diamond Pacific, CabKing and Kingsley North branded machines come to mind. They all come in either 6 inch or 8 inch models. They all have differences but cabbing on them is the same. My CabKing 8V1 has an 8” saw attachment, (optional). I’ve had it for a few years. I’m about ready to change the soft wheels for the first time. The saw attachment is good for trimming slabs. You can also use it to hand push small rocks (2 1/2 inches or smaller) to make your own slabs. jasoninsd just got a Kingsley North model. He is churning out some exceptional cabs with it. It’s such a fun hobby. I spend time on tumbling and cabbing. I’ve dabbled in faceting. I enjoy all of it.

StarguyThanks that is helpful. I have watched YouTube videos by the channel Michigan Rocks and I think he has a Hi-Tech brand one? When I started collecting rocks not even that long ago I though I just liked it for the cool rocks but now here I am contemplating several thousand dollars worth of equipment. My birthday is in May, maybe it can be my present to myself.

cadefoster117 LOL. It’s definitely an addictive hobby. As you get closer to making purchases, ask any questions you have on the forum. I’ve made some lapidary equipment purchases I regret. Rob’s YouTube videos are pretty helpful. I have a Hi-Tech trim saw. I love that thing.

Gneiss Cade!
I’d say you have a good teacher & You have the touch
Second cab? I didn’t see the first
I give you an A also
If you bring cookies on on a Pizza Bianco tour That would be a A plus
Probably answered this already
What type of machine did you use? Are you part of a club? What dop method?

I didn't realize I hadn't commented on the cab! I agree with others who state you nailed the dome shape on that one! The girdle looks a smidge thin...but you guys picked a wicked difficult material to work (in my opinion)...so good on you on this one! Truthfully, it's a fantastic job on your second cab. I bet he was VERY happy to get the Christmas cookies!

The first one you can probably see the pictures if you look up my posts but yeah I think it was easier than the obsidian. It was using Missouri lace agate. But my first lesson was only 8 days ago and my second lesson was yesterday.
My teacher has a Lortone cabbing machine with 8 belts but it is 4 on one machine and 4 on another. So one machine with 4 coarsest belts and the second with the 4 finer grained belts so it goes from like 40 grit through 3000 (though he says he doesn't use the 40 grit for much). He ordered it from Kingsley North but the belts were ordered separately. The hard diamond wheels and motors were from his previous machine.
I am the (new) secretary of our local club although the club doesn't have shared machines or anything right now. Dop method - he uses 2 sided carpet tape that he cuts and vice grips (in a towel) to the end part of a dop stick and the rock, but he has wooden handles for them. Actually he has a few 3D printed handles as well but they broke and he is asking his friend to print him more. He showed me the traditional method with the wax but he says he uses the carpet tape more.
Cookies and pizza, it's a deal!

I don't even want to think what it would look like if I tried something ridiculously soft like fluorite.
My teacher is the best. I wish I had started this sooner!
