Hey, I tumble rocks and want to drill holes in them to make jewelry...I saw the picture below, and thought maybe you carving people could help... It looks like a clamp of some kind. I have googled every term I can think of and can't find anything quite like it. Would this even work for drilling all the way through? Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks & Happy Holidays, Heather Tommy if this is in the wrong spot, let me know. (or move it)

That's really interesting Heather - I've never seen one of those before. Hopefully someone will be able to help figure it out. So the mechanism is you rotate the wing nut and it pulls the far end pieces towards you clamping the rock?

IDK, that's what it looks like...if you have any other suggestions for holding smaller rocks to drill....I'll take em!

I'm still holding out hope that someone will know exactly what the device is in your photo but in the mean time, I built a device for holding flat rocks underwater for drilling - not sure if something similar would work for you or not. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/post/1050692/thread

I was guilty of over thinking it when I started. I tried different things and then figured out that hand holding the rock worked just fine. I have a very shallow dish with a little piece of wood in the bottom. I hold the stone and pulse drill. No problem.

We're in construction mode at our house, so I've got all kinds of bits around. Thanks for getting the brain going!

I believe watchmakers may use clamps somewhat like that, too. I have a wooden clamp that would probably work well for holding rounded objects. A search for watch clamp or movement holder pulled up several similar hits. Micro-vise also seems like a popular term to describe them.

No vice needed for drilling I dip the stone In water to drill it I set the stone on a board I use fun tack sticky puddy to hold a stone to glue on findings

Thanks for the link. The above one is $8.99. CLErocks Have you used your yet? If so, how does it work? I am always a little leery of any clamps that are held in place by suction.

No. I haven’t used it yet. I got it just in time to get kicked out of my house. The electrical & plumbing is ALMOST done!!! So hopefully I’ll be all set up & rolling again by the end of march. I’ll keep you posted!

I’ll post below. Thanks for the link. The above one is $8.99. CLErocks Have you used your yet? If so, how does it work? I am always a little leery of any clamps that are held in place by suction.

I mean, my set up is REALLY basic. I screwed a faux wood piece into a bucket so I can fill it with water, and left that piece high enough I can remove the Vice as needed. (PS: that’s the first time I’ve done anything with my rocks except tumble them!! It’s starting to come together.)
