I have a highland park e-10 cabbing machine and I’m looking for suggestions, it currently has 2 grinding wheels, 1 expanding wheel and a wheel that you pinch sanding paper into, and a leather pad on the end. I don’t know the grit on the grinding wheels. Would I just start from scratch on the wheels and buy new? Suggested grit?

For the coarse wheels they are usually 80grit Silicon Carbide(SiC) and 220frit SiC. If You did that then use sand paper starting with SiC 220grit, 400grit and 600grit. If you choose to use diamond (I would use diamond) Use an 80 grit metal bonded diamond and 220 grit metal bonded diamond. Use these in the center area where you don't have to change them out often. If you can go to diamond wheels for the other spots I like Diamond Pacific Nova wheels. Or you could still use SiC. Depends on how much you want to spend and what annoyance level changing belts is for you. Of course you will have to change out the Nova wheels since you don't have enough spots (sorry Nova wheel grits 325, 600, 1200 minimum) Later you may want a 3000Nova and an 8000Nova and maybe even a 220Nova depending on annoyance level and what you cut and how you polish and of course how much money you want to spend.

Thanks, have you heard of that split wheel that pinches the paper? If so do you know what it is called? That one doesn’t look fun to use!

I use an expandable drum with silicon carbide and diamond belts. It works great and I can get a nice polish. I would recommend a sintered diamond wheel for your coarsest grit. I use an 80 grit steel core diamond wheel for shaping/doming.

Thumper makes sense! Thanks for the info! Glad to help! I'm fairly new to cabbing (Been doing it for about six months) and bought very used so I understand the confusion of old units. I had all silicon carbide when I first started at home. Sic wears fast so I wouldn't recommend it for those huge combo units. Diamond lasts longer, cuts cleaner, and doesn't get grooved. I can't praise diamond enough. 😂
