Was out looking for the source on some small pieces of agate I had found by Coaldale Junction, Nevada. Drove up a wash as far as I could towards the mountain, then got out and started hiking. Never thought about the origin of the name Coaldale Junction until I ran across this old coal mine. Also never knew we had coal in Nevada until this point.
Did a little research on it and came across this:
Here are pics from our trip.

Would this coal have been hard to extract because of all the metamorphosis in this area?

Would this coal have been hard to extract because of all the metamorphosis in this area? Not that I am aware of. They were doing a pretty good job of it at the time. What shut this mine down as well as so many other mines in Nevada is when the railroad pulled out that ran between Southern and Northern Nevada the cost of shipping ore became too expensive since it all had to be done by truck. This as the fate of another mine I used to frequent. They use to ship their ore up North, but when the railroad pulled out they started trucking the ore to Las Vegas for processing. Then was not very cot effective though and they could not compete when cheaper imported ore started coming in.

Nice photos, and good to see Jax again. Thanks for bringing us along on your adventure. I have passed through that junction twice going north at dusk in the last year.

If you look behind the buildings to the West along the highway you can find some nice copper ore. Seems to be silicated. Maybe 1/8 to 1/4 mile West of the buildings. Something to look for if you have a little more light and it is not far off the road.

James, I love seeing pics of older mines or older structures like this. We have a lot of older mines here in The Black Hills...and old farmhouses all around the area.
