Celebrating the new year with two new cabs: Ohio Flint and Royal Imperial Jasper. The RIJ is way too shiny to photograph well, and the high dome makes reflections worse. It reflects everything in the room under any light and at any angle. Focus is tricky, too. See the bear face in the first photo? This reminded me of Bruneau jasper, but with the background and orb colors reversed.

Those cabs look AMAZING! Great job. They're super shiny, perfectly shaped, and the girdles look perfect.

Beautiful cabs and nice polish. I think the first one is out of focus but the second one, which I love, is fine. What is that material? Flint? It's awesome.

rockjunquie Ohio Flint and Royal Imp Jasper. Maybe some bananas will bring it into focus.

Much better.
I would never have guessed RIJ. I did go back to reread what you wrote and saw that you had mentioned it. Great composition.

rockjunquie It looks like RIJ when you see the whole rock. Composition is tricky with big orbs. I tweaked my teardrop template shape to make it more plump at the bottom, better framing the orb.

Gorgeous cabs Jonathan. I like the shape you chose on that Flint. The RIJ really does take an amazing polish...and I really like the way you allowed the natural pattern in the stone to ride the shape. I did that same thing (or tried) today stenciling preforms on some Black Skin Agate.

I did that same thing (or tried) today stenciling preforms on some Black Skin Agate. Thanks, Jason. Let me know how that black skin agate is to cab. I've got some whole nodules that I need to cut someday. The RIJ is from a 3/8" slab -- like you cut them when you were first getting the hang of your saw. I cut it on a slab saw, so I have no good excuse. The super high dome creates kind of a cool effect, but grinding the dome was a bear. The dome would be higher still, but I tried to get rid of that lighter colored spot in the bottom center. It didn't want to go away, so I stopped before I screwed up the dome.

Great cabs. I’m with you… it reminds me of Bruneau as well
