Where did I put my hammer and chisel, your pics make me want to start wackin'. Can't wait to see pics of finished product. Red is my favorite color in rocks. Today that is.

Ahhh Remeber james is a knapper- he can read the lines, weak point, stress fractures- in a rock- I'm will to bet that he hits the rock a lot lighter than you all think- one or 2 blows with the hammer and he achieves what he wants- Hammering rock takes practice- I have worked a lot of Herkimer diamond rock (well over 500 lbs.) and after a while you can "read" the rock- where it will and will not fracture, How it is gonna break, what WON'T work- Keep practicing and you'll all get the hang of it!

Wow James - everything you do seems effortless! - I got some of that same type of petwood from a supplier in Canada - no big chunks like that though but the grain is the same - less hammering on my part anyways

LOL the only thing I could think of was OMG please don't let him slip and hit his foot in those flip flops! Now I know why your rocks turn out so dang pretty...you start out with gorgeous stuff to begin with. How the heck can ya go wrong?

James looks like a pretty tough dude....he probably breaks his rocks bare-foot and nekkid when we're not all watching! Steve

I have to be honest and say that I actually looked for black toe nails looking at those flip flops.

What BEAUTIFUL pet wood. And I can't believe you can split it so evenly with a chisel. But you da man! Last time I tried the barefoot hold I split my big toe open. Wasn't pretty. Dying to see the progress. James, I somehow expected you to be an older man. And not nearly so, well, cute. *blush* Not flirting, just surprised. Very wise and talented for your apperant age.

Thanks for the complements Cookie. You really made my day. A lot of the older "rock experts" I've met are actually surprised by my knowledge. Being fairly young, they often ask questions like " so you like rocks huh?" or "do you know what kind of stone this is?" Before long they realize that I know what I'm talking about. In fact, the old man who sold me this wood was surprised that I knew the names of all the stuff he was selling. Yeah, flip-flops aren't the best choice of foot protection. I'm more worried about hitting my bare hand with a 2 lb hammer. I've done that a few times. Gaetz, I looked everywhere for your pic's and I couldn't find them. PM me when you have time. Steve, Most petrified wood is useless for knapping. Heat treating will actually destroy the stuff.
