This is a piece of Singleton Ranch Agate that I collected 3 years ago. It measures about 4 inches by 3 inches and maybe 1 1/2" thick at it widest. Cutting this along the flat axis was going to be a problem. Normal clamping was not going to work and nether was gluing as the surface was uneven on both sides so I had set it aside for several months waiting for an inspiration. Then it occurred to me("I've had an apostrophe", "that's epiphany you ninny" - Name that movie!!) that I could put it in the Geode Holding clamp and cut it that way. It worked perfectly and this is the result. IMG_3920 by Findrocks, on Flickr IMG_3922 by Findrocks, on Flickr IMG_3923 by Findrocks, on Flickr This is just about the best agate I have cut from West Texas. Question, I can now glue it and take a full size slab off of each piece and maybe a half slab/end piece off of each. So, do I polish both halves as they are preserving the whole piece and the blue background color? If slabbed it will most likely lose a good bit of the blue color. (hey jasoninsd that's 3 different picture threads for me in two days!!) Henry

Beautiful! And good job using the geode clamp to get the right cut!
I'd be sorely tempted to slab one of those halves just to see what you get out of it. Even if you lose some of the blue color, it will still make great looking slabs.

If I can name that movie, am I off the Hook! I noticed the threads! Good for you Henry! You're getting caught up on the pics queue! I'd be tempted to slab and cab one half, and then face polish the better of the two halves...but I'm more into cabs than I am specimens. This piece really is pretty cool, so the slab and cab would have to be considered a day or two...

The guy was amazing, a true talent. If you have a couple moments check out this Video of his first appearance on Carson. There's a point in the segment where Johnny is wondering what the heck is happening!! (I think I just hi-jacked my own Thread!!!) www.youtube.com/results?search_query=robin+williams+first+appearance+on+carson

His ability for improvisation was one of the best ever! I have actually watched that clip several times. Every once in awhile I'll go back through some of the old Johnny Carson clips. He's another talent I miss. I remember watching Johnny's farewell episode. A very emotional time in our house that night...similar to MASH's final farewell... Wow...you started the derailment! LOL

I have his album, Realty Reality...What A Concept. Only comedy album I ever bought. Made me laugh every time I listened to it.
Back to the thread -- Henry the gold plumes in that agate are far too beautiful to slice it up. I vote for polishing both pieces as a specimen! That would end up in my too pretty to cut drawer.

I vote for polished specimen. Blue will almost certainly disappear when it gets thin.
Such a beautiful rock!

Also in favor of a polished specimen. That's a beautiful piece. The colors... Wow!

Are the yellow plumes soft, i.e. likely to become depressions as you polish the face? If so thicker is better, leaving you some room to fill and re-polish if necessary. Nice stuff. Similar to some less spectacular stuff I bought in Marfa. I puzzled over it a long time and still have tiny unfinished cabs.

I checked the hardness across the face of the cut and it seems to be consistently hard. That's difficult to know until I start the grinding/polishing process. I am going to try and use the Vib Lap. I will start with 220 instead of 80, and check every hour or so to see how it's working. Will also only do one piece at a time. The pieces will need a weight for the Lap.
