I bought this dop kit (handle / screws / holder) from Highland Park: I like it a lot. The handle grip is adjustable (slides up and down, making the handle longer or shorter). This allowed me to find a length that is comfortable for my large hands. The anodized aluminum shaft is shaped nicely which allows one hand to comfortably and securely grip the dop close to the cab. I found the large diameter of the plastic grip at the other end to be comfortable as well. The 12 stainless screws that came with the kit easily attach to cabs with super glue. The handle holds the screw + cab very securely with a stainless set screw. The included plastic base holds 11 screws + cabs and the handle. I will drill a small hole in the base for the hex key that fits the two set screws. Additional stainless screws can found at any hardware store. Thanks in part to this new dop handle, I think I have finally figured out how I like to make cabs. I prefer no dop on the hard wheels, but I do like the dop for the resin wheels. I can grind bevels for the dome much more precisely without a dop. But when it comes to removing scratches with the resin wheels, the dop makes it much easier to spin the cab around. The screw is short enough that I can comfortably grind the dome without the handle and attach the handle when I move to the resin wheels. Using the dop makes the final polish with cerium much easier also. That step is always a little sketchy when done without a dop since cerium is so grabby. Here are a few photos, included the first two cabs that I made using this new handle.

The results speak for themselves...

The results speak for themselves... I'll take 40% of the credit for the results, give 40% to the quality of the rough, and 20% to the dop handle. But seriously, I'm not sure if the cabs are any better than those made with my normal no dop approach, but it sure was a lot faster and easier! And a lot less stress on my finger joints. I've dopped a number of times before with wooden dop sticks and wax. This was way more comfortable.

Finished another with the new dop handle. Excuse the weird reflections. Before After

holajonathan Do you think they would work with dop wax? I really like the way wax supports the bottom of the cab. I know I’ve had cabs that would have broken without the extra support. I often find myself pushing on the wax or cab bottom and only using the stick for angle control. those cabs are gorgeous.

You could also look for a bolt with a really wide tapered head (if such a thing exists). If the taper on the head were right, you could grab on to that instead of a ball of wax. That would allow you to use super glue which seems to hold better than wax, especially in the winter. My technique with the dop is similar to what you describe.

Pretty cabs, Jonathan! That last Amy Sage is gorgoeus. I use a dop specifically because it is less painful for my fingers which are developing arthritis. I can do them without a dop, but it hurts my fingers and sometimes my fingers get "stuck" in a position which really sucks. If using a dop relieves stress on your joints, that's the way to go. Stave off the arthritis for as long as you can.

Stave off the arthritis for as long as you can. So it's not normal for your fingers to get "stuck" when gripping a cab? (especially when doing the cerium polish) I can relate to painful finger joints. I've never done more than 4 or 5 cabs in a day for that reason. I can already tell that using the dop more is going to help.
