Does anyone have some Jet they would be willing to part with?
A good friend of mine is looking for something Jet.
A rough piece, polished, cab, sphere, etc.
My friend does not have internet access, but she is trusting me to find something that she will love.
If rough or polished, I would love some, too.
Payment via PayPal for specimen(s) and shipping.
Thank you.

I have a bunch of slabs that I cut from a jet ashtray/bowl. They run 1.5" x 5" and would make cabs.

I wonder if the carbonized wood that I find on the Oregon Coast would be considered Jet ? It's hard, heavy and formed in marine sediments that are millions of years old. Some of it shows a nice sheen in the sunshine. I've never tried to work any of it and don't know if it will polish. Here's a few pics and a video showing the sheen. The holes are Piddock Clam borings.

I'm no authority, but I suspect what you have is less metamorphosed than jet. Jet will definitely make the water run black when you grind on it. It will take a good polish as well. Why not put a piece to the wheel for our collective edification? Those are nice looking pieces --- from the beach??

Since you brought up Jet. I am wondering how good of a polish the Jet takes. I read somewhere that cannel coal is sometimes used for Jet. I picked up some pieces from a mine west of Knoxville TN that had a 6" zone of cannel coal in the coal seam. I have been disappointed with its polish. Any suggestions on polishing?

I have also seen it in situ, weathering out of the bedrock. I'll have to dust off the old Cab-Mate and try cutting some.
