Here are the rocks I picked up around the building when I was working at the evacuee shelter in Louisiana. This was just from poking around in the shrubbery. I'm impressed! There are some interesting things about this rock.

Those turned out great, I like that gold and white one down toward bottom center. You found lots of color in a short time there, those reds are great too.

Alice, I noticed the similarity before & actually it seems like these are sort of the generic, default option rocks that I pick up all over the place -- jaspers & other quartzy rocks. What's especially cool about the Louisiana rocks is that they almost all have lines in them -- sometimes one straight band, sometimes parallel lines, sometimes more feathery. They seem to be fracture lines that resealed, usually leaving a white pattern but not always, they are black at times or brown, but always contrasting. I don't know how obvious it is in the photo, but you can really see how it is reproduced over and over again in these rocks. In addition, generally these areas are not softer material that undercuts, the lines are hard and shine up just like the rest of the rock, which in my experience is unusual. Makes you wonder whether there was some kind of cataclysmic event like an earthquake that broke all these rocks the same way.

with the ones that I'm tumbling, I find the some of the quartzy white bands are softer then the rest of the rock. Almost like it's like sandstone (if that makes any sense). The quartzy bands do take a shine in polish, but when you run your finger over the band, it feels like a ditch.
The black banded ones seem to be just as hard as the rock itself. I've yet to get one out of the barrel where the line sticks out, or ditched like the quatrz I was just describing.
I just find it amazing that the same rocks from another continent can be found on another, but when looking at just one continent / country you can't find the same rocks in the east that you do in the west.

Were you working near the casino barges??? Looks to me like you hit the jackpot! Nice work puppie!!!
Just goes to show you how this hobby effects us, even amongst all that devistation, things of beauty abound. And leave it to a rockhound to dig them up!!
Good on ya' to puppie for working the evac shelter, I wish I could have helped with more than my donation.

It's funny about these rocks. The shelter was secured by the Guard and as the place got really crowded they upped the security and started wanding us coming in and so forth, so I was unloading my pockets full of rocks on their desk and having discussions about what was going to look good tumbled, etc. I could tell back then that I had some decent stuff but it was hard for them to see it. It was really very rough when I found it and volume-wise, I really lost a lot in the tumbling. Not only are they special from the sentiment standpoint, they are just so nice for stuff that was backfill as far as I know. They certainly aren't unique rocks. It looks like stuff I pick up all of the time everywhere I go, but the lines make this stuff different.

Hmmm. I guess the shine must not have photographed well, because they really are very very shiny already!

the picture I posted up in this thread is of a batch I'm doing right now. Maybe you're thinking of the finished batch I finished back in October? (same type of rocks)
