I've made a few heart shaped cabs, but am not interested in making hearts. Topic: 3-Part Series Cabbing Essentials Webinar
What: Part 1: Cabbing Essentials Webinar with Russ Kaniuth When: February 4, 2022, 7pm EST Here's the link to join: www.hplapidary.com/pages/highland-park-lapidary-live-webinar
I got an email from HP for this Webinar. An Etsy customer mentioned him a month ago so I looked up his work. He's down the road from me in Sunnyvale. I attended a previous HP webinar and the topic was lubricants which I found to surprisingly be a dry lecture. Cabbing is so personal but I'll attend. www.facebook.com/SunsetRidgeLapidaryArts

This kind of humor puts you on a slippery slope.

I saw a zoom link on social media, I may attend as well. I checked out the oil talk after the fact, other than a small bit of misinformation about Kevins Stellar oil it seemed spot on, John is a pretty smart guy and much more candid than I expected. Seems that he and Sheldon work well together, the inventor and the businessman.

Russ sells a lot of heart shaped cabs on Facebook and I've seen his adoring public calling him the King of Hearts...
I've tried a few times and earned a bit different title...

Attended the cabbing webinar. Not a good ROT, return on time and not the best use of the guest's time. 3 parts. Today was part 1.

I missed it, too early to come in from the shop to watch someone do something I should be doing while someone else tried to sell equipment I can't afford and don't need.

I watched the whole thing.
1. It is a positive that a manufacturer is interested in furthering the hobby. 2. It is a negative that so much listeners' time is spent promoting products related and unrelated to the webinar. 3. Russ was the guest and I learned that his setup is probably similar to Paul's; 8 inch wheels and a low grit (60) soft wheel for the second step. He also has a large space between wheels. He notches his hearts using the edge of the wheel and based on my limited experience it is obvious. He dops with super glue. He does a lot of polishing with zam and also a dremel. Russ was silent for most of the webinar. 4. I am self taught and learn from this forum. I thought there was some misinformation. There was a discussion about how thick a slab should be to make a cab and how to choose a slab. Discussion on templates for preforms. My opinion is that it is all about the pattern and that dome or lack of dome will depend on the thickness of the slab and the depth of the pattern.
I will attend the next one since it will be dark and cold when it is being held, so no grinding.

I watched the second one. More cabbing content. Demo videos of trimming and grinding including a heart. What I learned was the diverse ways of getting the job done. He holds the dop and the cab when he grinds. I do that mainly because I started out dopless. Russ uses an 80 grit hard and everything after that is soft starting with a 60. He marks the girdles with a wide tip sharpy, hooking the plastic tip around the edge of the cab. He manages to keep the ink off his fingers. He marked one and didn't bother with another. He marks the top of the shape and then grinds to the bottom. Two sided templates were mentioned by HP. I mark the top for the trim saw and then remark the bottom for grinding and work from the girdle up. Once a bottom is screwed up it is hard for me to fix. He could probably do all shapes without any marks. He uses a dop handle with the screws and super glue. Acetone for removal except certain material. Someone in the chat mentioned some kind of loctite tape. The exact name is probably discontinued. What I found from loctite said don't immerse in water. I tried Scotch double sided exterior tape to dop and it wouldn't hold. I won't use wax and don't like superglue so I am always looking for an alternative
