This is a pretty killer preform. It’s enormous.   By dopping it like this, it greatly reduces the chance of breakage. The wax supports the entire cab. Any weak spots have support underneath them.  It’s kind of an ugly dop job. Just saying. Sorry about the ugly toes. |

That's going to be a killer cab Brent!  I've done that same type of dop before...but I use CA. When I torch the dop to get the glue loose, the glue softens up and comes right off with a razor blade. It just makes sense to stabilize it during the grinding/polishing if you can like this! *I wasn't going to say anything about the toes! LOL |

Howdy jasoninsd . I’ve got nine more ready to be cabbed, including that one. They’re all pretty nice but the size of that one is a little daunting. It’s a pretty thick slab so getting a flat dome shouldn’t be too hard. Stay ruined. don’t torch garnets or opals. They’re heat sensitive. |

Yeah, that wax is good and hard. It really helps to stabilize.

Thanks perkins17. Crazy lace agates typically have some weak spots between the layers. The full support dop eliminates that issue. |

I don't dop stones that large, I simply hand hold them. I can hand hold down to about an 18x13 oval, below that I use wax. Yes, I polish and grind away fingernails a little sometimes but I like the feel of hand holding while grinding/polishing.
