Holy Moley! That's some goodness right there.
I really like this. What is it? Is that crazy lace?

yes. It was a thin tumbled piece that I used a template to shape.

Beautiful! So many times, a preform will show a great pattern that disappears when one grinds the crown. Flat tops, as you've stated and illustrated, go a long way towards solving that problem. Would have been a crime to grind away those incredible designs.

Way back when the old pros made flat cabs but they called them buff tops.

I think flat top works when the stone's pattern has "depth." That is true of most of your examples, most especially, the Biggs, OJ, Montana, Howardite, crazy lace, Blue Mountain, and whatever that stuff on the bottom right is (which I like a lot).

There are 4 from a Willow Creek slab in the last 4 full rows. A leaf or tree, a flower, a pelican and Z (the mark of Zorro). All of these had nothing below the surface and I needed to be careful not erase anything

I like flat tops and yours are great. There are many reasons why a domed cab will not always work.
