Delivered today. Two round bits came with the machine. The groove cutter was a separate purchase. I see some groove wraps in my future. I’m pretty impressed with this machine.

That's awesome! I saw Drummond Island Rocks' tutorial on this and thought it was really cool. I should add one to the arsenal. Maybe you could use those round bits to get cabs preformed? Just a thought...

That's awesome! I saw Drummond Island Rocks' tutorial on this and thought it was really cool. I should add one to the arsenal. Maybe you could use those round bits to get cabs preformed? Just a thought... I've tried to use mine to shape my preforms. I've found using the edge of my trim saw blade works far better. It's faster and doesn't chip the preforms as badly... That was one of the main reasons I bought it as I thought I'd use it for shaping preforms. I had a tendency to get "caught" in the motion around the bit, which resulted in a "divot" in the perimeter of the cab... You’re funny Tela rockjunquie I know it’s not real wrapping, but it’s a way to start for me. First...CONGRATS!! That's really awesome! Second...it IS real wrapping...just groove wrapping!

I’ll be tapping your brain for help. I ordered some square 22 gauge copper from KN today.
Thank you for helping me.

Excellent purchase- I've yet to try grooving with mine - but it's great to shape a pre-form. Keeps the cab flat on the table.
Have fun with it.

Nice addition to your arsenal there. I'm sure Jason has you dialed in on groove depth setup, but I'm adding photos of the rig I did for Robin.
Flat bar is notched just enough for the spindle. Can be attached with small bolts and washers on each end. I'd epoxy bolt heads to a piece of flat stock, then stick the bolts up through the table.
Depth set by using an allen wrench to get it close enough. Feeler gage to set height in girdle.

I feel really dumb asking -
but what is the purpose of the bar ? The bit has a set screw to the shaft to allow you to set height.
Please explain.

The bar is for the depth of cut of the groove. When you groove wrap you want the wire to be flush with the outside of the cab when it is wrapped. Too shallow a cut and the wire sticks out, too deep and and it gets swallowed up and you can't see it.

hummingbirdstones2 Thanks Vince. What a simple but elegant idea. I will set mine up like that. how thick it’s the bar?

Thank you Robin for explaining- After I posted my question ( and stared at your pictures longer),I came to the realization that that HAD to be what it was for. Thanks for the confirmation.

Not ignoring you Starguy - I just got home from the day job.
I think that was a piece of .032" brass I had on hand. Rigid enough to be functional.
To set the groove depth precisely (a necessary step - as the beautiful little jewelry maker here told me) use a piece of the same wire as your wrap.

I got the fence for controlling the depth of groove cutting completed. I ended up using some pipe hangar strap I had laying around. The strap is .024 inches thick. I may need to chamfer the backs of preforms after they are grooved. I think the preforms may ride up onto the fence if they are chamfered. Picture 1 shows the fence. I will attach it with machine bolts through the deck. Pictures 2 and 3 show the depth adjustment range. I should be able to cut a pretty deep groove or a very shallow one. I can’t wait to try it. Thanks jasoninsd and hummingbirdstones2 for giving me some ideas to control the depth. I appreciate your expertise.

I really like that Brent! You really do have a wide range with regards to depth! I can't imagine you'd need it any deeper that 18g or 16g width...but if you do, you've got the ability. I can't wait to see your first groove wrap!
