Very nice! So those are made out of jet, the gem variety of coal? I had no idea it had shells in it, cool.

Hi all, Thanks for your kind comments
Jet is a foscilised wood found on the east coast of UK (Whitby) or in my birth place Bilsdale a (valley named after William the conquorer)
My great great step uncle used to buy it in Bilsdale from the miners and then sell it to the jewelers in Whitby in Victorian England 35 mile away ,He used to take a full weeks mining on a pack horse.
I found a seam as a young man in the early 60's and this is from that +a few bits picked up from the spoil heaps that we had on our farm. These bits have been tumbled for a day or two to get rid of the clay/ shale deposit revealing the foscels.
It was very popular as jewelry for people mourning the death of a loved one in Victorian times 1825 to 1901.
A relative of coal with a black glass finish worked by hand as -- After cutting and shaping - 80 grit sand paper 120g emery cloth 320g emery cloth 800g wet drypaper 1200g wet dry, CO polish and finaly Silver polish.takes a quite a bit of time but comes up with this mirrow black finish that I havent quite captured in the photo.
The large cross stone has a "eye" in it with the aid of a bit of kitchen foil !
Again many thanks for looking and your comments
Yours Jack Yorkshire UK

Wow, that's foil shining in the bottom of the big one? How on earth did you get it so smooth? Not a wrinkle in it. That's very interesting Jack, that stuff is really neat. Is hand polishing the only way to get it to shine?
