Hi there, I'm a new member. I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place. (Feel free to move the thread if I'm posting wrong) Anyways.... I have a couple large rough pink opal rocks with really good color layering. I've never carved a cameo but I've been doing a lot of research, and am pretty sure this material will be great for what I want to try. I have a couple really good side profile images of my granddaughter, I want to try to do a cameo of her for my daughter. Does anyone know of a good website that can take me by the hand & lead me down the right path? Any input would be appreciated Thanks!

If you can find a copy of Henry Hunt's book Lapidary Carving for Creative Jewelry somewhere that they don't want an arm and a leg for, get it. It has been out of print for a while, but it has great information in it including how to make your own carving tools. It's paperback. He also wrote American Lapidary: Designing Carved Gemstones. You could also look through the carving board and check out Kurt's kk threads here. I have only carved one opal and it was a freeform, so I'm no help there.

Your note about Henry Hunt's book prompted me to look on my shelf to see if I had it. I do and found much of interest in it. . . but its not likely to be worth $118 that one vender on Thriftbooks wanted for it. Interesting ideas on how to make tools for carving. Shop hard and you may find an inexpensive copy or something just as good through thriftbooks or adlibris.

A Dremel with carbide bits would probably work. I'd suggest practicing on a cheaper stone until you get your process down.

I started my carving with a Dremel and a reasonable set of diamond burrs from Amazon. I Started carving river rocks and went from there. Make sure you have safety glasses and dust mask to avoid breathing in harmful dust. Look up Silicosis's.

i had to get gung hoe and buy a foredom tx flex shaft but you dont. i wish i had known how valuable a fixed point carving station is. it is also pretty easy to build your own. a quick google search of fixed point carving machines will help. im on my cell so my ability to link and do proper explanation is limited. have a great day!
