Went collecting yesterday, found bunches of sandstone but there were many different textures. They are mostly tan, brown and blue. The blues don't show up too well in the photos. I know regular sandstone would dissolve in a tumbler, but I found varying levels of hardness, I think from regular sandstone up to really tough stuff, looks like jasper. All of my observations are based on my many weeks of experience working with rocks Please post your thoughts on these pics, all opinions welcome...
This seems like normal sandstone to me, layered, soft, granulated:
These are not as soft and have conchodial fracture, but still seem kind of grainy:
These look and feel to me like they are well on their way to turning into jasper or something similar. Not grainy, but they seem have an external coat around them that has been wearing at a different rate than the stuff in the interior:
And then this stuff seems to me to be jasper, very hard, conchoidial fracture, it's mostly chocolate brown with some blue and greens. Photo doesn't show blue very well at all. The stripe on the little one lower left is actually blue/green. The big one top right has a darkish center, surrounded by a ring of lighter material (a half circle here) with more dark stuff outside of that and then another concentric curve of what looks like white quartz to me (in the photo it looks like reflection at the top of the rock):
So, I am hoping to learn if these samples seem to be what I think they are. I am guessing these are all from sandstone, perhaps in different stages of metamorphosis??? I believe the stuff I am calling jasper will certainly tumble well.
I would so appreciate, comments, opinions, suggestions if you have the time and inclination.
Oh and here's one last piece, it's so pretty, has red and gold and yellow in it, seems harder than regular sandstone that I am familiar with. I think it will slab nicely but I'm thinking it probably won't polish...:
Thanks for looking
