We took a family trip up to Llano and did some rockhounding. We stayed in a cottage within the city limits. Llano has great shops and restaurants! Highlights were the ice cream shop, Gio's Italian restaurant, and Enchanted Rocks (Frank gave us some great rockhounding tips! He also had some great rocks and jewelry in his shop at great prices.) We went under the bridge in the city of Llano, and down off the end of Ash street in the neighborhood. City collecting was ok, but not great. We found chert and various forms of quartz and schist. There are 100s of beautiful sculptures under the Llano city bridge. We had a great time exploring and taking pictures. So, even though the collecting wasn't great the exploration was fantastic! My 4 year old daughter had a blast! We also went to a Llanite outcrop off of RT 16 north of Llano. We got about 70 pounds of good quality Llanite, and a 5 gallon bucket of "soft" Llanite. Not sure what we will do with the soft stuff? If anyone has ideas - let me know. Llanite PhotosWe also went to CR 102 where it crosses the Llano river. We got some nice colored chert (cool yellows and oranges) and quartz there, and there were some nice swimming holes. Chert and Quartz samples - plus a few more . . . .Overall it was a great trip, and we would certainly recommend a stay in Llano - it is a beautiful Texas town. Cheers, Dillon

Very cool! I love visiting Llano. If you didn't try Coopers BBQ, it's an eating place you don't want to miss.

I'm not out avidly looking for them...but frequently when I'm hounding along the Cheyenne River I come across some. I find a lot of rocks with the same type of clam fossils as in the rock that Dillon found. The ones up here have a darker matrix than the light brown one that he found. EDIT - You can see the same type of matrix differential in the Texas Turitella versus the Wyoming Turitella. The Texas kind has that light colored matrix, while the Wyoming (not far from here) has the really dark brown matrix. I'm assuming it has to do with the type of mud/sediment the sea creatures settled into before it hardened.

We didn't stop at Coopers - unfortunately. I did eat there a couple of years back when we were passing through town. You are right it is great BBQ! Very cool! I love visiting Llano. If you didn't try Coopers BBQ, it's an eating place you don't want to miss.
