Here are some more pics from collecting yesterday. The smaller ones seem to have quartzy crystals, I thought the big one was quartz as well and I guess it probably is but it is very dense and has a variety of colours in it. I am wondering if folks think this is good tumbling material?: Here's the backside of the big one: Thoughts on ID would be appreciated. Also, what is the best way to determine if something might tumble well or not? If the hardness seems right, is there something I can do on the grinder polisher that will give me a clue in less than the several weeks a tumbler would take???

Boy I'm no help at all with id'ing but I'd definitely tumble them. I've found similar stuff and it took a very nice shine.

My guess would be quartzite, the metamorphosed form of sandstone. It should polish pretty well.

I also think quartzite or maybe cryptocrystalline quartz (I do not know whether the two are one and the same) -- but the Montana agates and similar stones from the West look like those. It's as if they were made out of poured, melted glass. If they are the same stuff, they will be beautiful tumbled rocks but they take a long time to shape because they are so hard and dense. Patience pays off. As far as I know you can assume that if it is a hard rock it will tumble and polish. Unless it's a ruby or sapphire!
