Okay, here's some of the stuff we bought at the rock shop. My wife picked up some small geodes and fossils and pet wood, but she already wrapped them up to give to our nephew for his birthday. Fire Agate. Notice how clean these pieces are(no matrix). Rather than sell by the gram with the matrix still attached, the owner cleans them up and sells them by the piece. got these for $5.00 Montana dendritic agate more and some kind of yellow agate another agate a block of really cool jasper Rhodonite A very nice geode. Here's a good tip I learned from the owner. When picking out geode nodules, go for the lighter, rather than the heavier ones. There is more room for crystals to grow if the geode is hollow inside. Like this one. This was supposed to go to my nephew too, but my hammer slipped out of my hand and I broke it open by "mistake". And lastly, a slab of Carey Plume Agate We could have stayed there for the rest of the afternoon and bought so much more. He had stacks of containers behind the counter with opals, rubies, garnets.......you name it. Oh, it is located just north of Hopland for those who are close enough to want to visit his shop. I'll start a new thread with pics of our haul from the beaches up at Eureka.

That's beautiful rock you bought. I think I like the Carey Plume the best. Couldn't you get the owner to adopt you?

Yeah, that tip about geodes is a great one (and almost so obvious when you stop to think about it)!
This may be a really ignorant question, but did you really hammer the geode apart? I love the idea of breaking open geodes just for the surprise factor, but don't know how to without smashing them to smithereens!
Man, you are soooo lucky to live near such a wonderful rock shop! It's prolly a good thing I don't.....

Hey Ed, nice looking rocks! And right in the heart of beer country to boot. Hopland? Oh yes, I've hit many a brewery in that area with my son!
