I bought some Tahoma slabs. Tahoma is usually cut across the seam. When cut with the seam there will be layers of material and frog skin like patterns. The slabs were rough on the opposite side. I checked with the seller about thickness so that when the bottoms were ground I would be close to 1/4 inch before grinding flat. They will have knife edges and dips to work around. The second picture doesn't really show how uneven they are. [/
a] The first step was to flatten. I start with an 80 grit wheel to get more even and remove matrix. I rotate the slab against the wheel and this leaves a dome. Next step is to use an 80 grit end lap and grind flat. The center will be flat and the sides will not be. The next step is to study the edges to see what the pattern would be like when ground. When the pattern is similar the easiest thing would to make the face the bottom and grind the rough side. With these I don't have the option The next step is to come up with some shapes and patterns that will work with the flatter areas on the back. I need to trim the large slab to separate. The thicker part from the thinner before I can design. I will trim the preforms and then grind flat and remove more matrix with the end lap.

Hi stardiamond, tahoma looks and sounds like it's a little difficult to work with, but it's a very unique agate. I look forward to the finished cabs. Thanks.

I tried to flip the preforms in the bottom row. I didn't like the faces. I ground them and only the one on the left can be flipped so it is dopped. The next steps for the other 5 is the lap, redrawing the shape and the grinding the shape.

Very beautiful cabs. I bought some Tahoma just a few weeks ago. I'm going to grind away the top crust and hopefully I see some orbs.
